    Ok,good.
And now check if there should be any updates for you in Windows Update.

Reply if there should be any errors or problems.

In the past, I had so many problems with Windows updates that I disabled them. So....if and when I re-enable them, there will be many Windows Updates waiting for me!

I have things to do now, and must leave the forum. Thank you for your help. I'll report back on how things go.

There should be 1 major upgrade to the latest major build, and maybe 3 or so updates after that.

I agree that there were some bad upgrades/updates issued immediately after 1903.

If you use Windows search (file explorer search box) you will find the way it works changes. This can be reverted.

Sorry, mistyped the chkdsk command; chkdsk c: /scan - c not s as you're checking drive c: - irrelevant now

    Whew!

Thanks for all your help, dalchina and NTN.

I bit the bullet, and allowed Windows to update. Am happy to report that things went better than expected. Based on past experience, I expected the update to break things, but in the end, only a few items (cosmetic, mostly) needed tweaking.

Best of all, the update fixed my Windows Defender issue. A relief!

Again, my thanks to both of you for your help and support.

    Take care and be well!

Good. Updates to Win 10 as it heads towards end of service life can be expected to continue to be trivial.

Consider now starting a new sequence of disk imaging as a lot of system files have changed before something breaks. (E.g. Macrium Free + large enough external storage).

I absolutely will. I have a license for Macrium Reflect, and was prepared to restore a month-old image if yesterday's Windows Update had gone south. (Which should have been my first move, perhaps, but I was hoping a firewall fix would be simpler than it turned out to be.)

Mind you, I'm so glad I came here! It's unlikely that I would ever have updated Windows without your urging and support. Very grateful to you and NTN.

    Remember this:

Often good fix and First Aid for trouble.
    In CMD(adm)
    Type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth and enter.
    and
    Type sfc /scannow and enter.

And then restart PC if problem is reported.

By the way, I also see that your excellent and powerful laptop should have no problem with running on Windows 11...too.
