Crucial Access Denied - Folder always reverts to Read Only...!

    Hello,

Under Win 10 22H2, we keep having a maddening problem. It's maddening because suggested solutions seem to work, but only for a while, then the difficulty reappears:
A file crucial to the operation of our small network, keeps reverting to Read Only. I have searched, and experimented until my fingers are bleeding, but with no lasting luck.

Might there be an actual solution out there that someone might share?

    Sincere thanks for any help,
    Lothar

    Hi again,

I came upon a suggestion that was offered essentially as an "If all else fails, try this bombproof fix."
I logged in as an administrator, and entered at a command prompt:

    attrib -s -h -r "E:\Paradox\NETFILES\*.*" /s /d

That entry brought me back to the command prompt (that is, it was accepted) but after a reboot, it seems to have failed. The folder is again, Read Only.

    Thanks,
    Lothar

If you're referring to the tick box for a folder designating it as 'read only' this tick box being checked is relatively meaningless. (Properties, General, Attributes).

Please explain the practical issue you are facing with this folder - but you then also refer to a file?
    Which is it, and where?

What actually happens when you believe it is read-only and you do try to change it?

    Thanks.

    Lothar,

1 dalchina is correct. That checkbox is practically meaningless.

2 You called your thread Crucial Access Denied but then did not mention that in your text. Please state what access is being denied.

    All the best,

    Hello dalchina & Dennis,

    Your comments are incredibly valuable...

Here is an outline of the history that had me believing that access was being denied:

We use (a now ancient database called) Paradox 9. It controls sharing of files with the contents of a particular folder we call NETFILES. Essentially, it makes it prevents two or more users from editing any Paradox files, at the same time.

Two days ago, I found that I could not open any Paradox files without getting errors telling me that they were not accessible because they were already open to other users (when I was certain that this was not the case.) I also occasionally got errors telling me that Paradox could not access the NETFILES folder...

The specificity of that last error message caused me to make a hasty judgement about the situation: I checked, and saw that NETFILES was marked as Read Only, and that seemed to explain all the errors I was seeing, as I knew that to share files, NETFILES had to make full control available to all users (Hey, I'm a trusting guy, so I believed the checkbox...)

I simply never thought of the possibility that the checkbox could be telling me something that was false.

So, based on your comments, I tried saving, and reading a few files in NETFILES from other systems on the Lan, and it worked fine. Indeed, the checkbox pointed me in the wrong direction, and the questions you two asked, pointed me to a potentially useful approach: Later today, I will try using Paradox on one system, while other systems on our Lan are shut down. If I can get that working, I will add another etc.

I will keep you posted, and am most appreciative of the help you have already provided me,
    Lothar

Thanks- it seemed likely to be something more obscure... agreed, the checkbox is confusing/peculiar.

Sounds more like some kind of networking/permissions problem perhaps..

A few years ago, people sometimes used to find the same problem with opening Word documents.
    - It turned out that Word sometimes failed to delete its own temporary files when a document was closed and that caused the erroneous error message.
    - Word generated the erroneous error message merely because it was doing its inadequate best to interpret the signals it was receiving from Windows.
I wonder if something similar is happening to you. Your application cannot correctly interpret the responses it encounters.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Hi Dennis,

Your comment about Word is analogous to my situation, and I am already having significant success... Paradox generates .LCK files, and then deletes 'em when they are no longer needed, but hiccups such as power fluctuations can prevent the deletion.

I just shut down all but one system on our small LAN, searched for stray LCK files on that system, found a few, and manually deleted them. Then, I held my breath, and ever so gently launched Paradox. It started up properly, and all files I needed opened as they should. I'll soon do the same thing on two other systems, and I expect that we will be up and running.

    Thanks for your assistance,
    Lothar
