I have never seen anybody claim that Defender was infallible.

Defender has been ranked by AV-TEST | Antivirus & Security Software & AntiMalware Reviews as being in the top set for most of the last four years or so. Its results fell down the rankings last Summer and it has still not regained its normal full marks [6, 6, 6] yet.

I believe that the provenance of software is a key consideration since we have to trust that the software does what it says. The rule of open & accountable law is, to my mind, a key element of earning that trust.
Indeed nobody said WD is infallible, by "infallible" I was referring to MS products which are often spoken of as if talking of pope or something.

My choice is still WD even if Kaspersky outperforms it, anti-virus is irrelevant for protection anyway.

I did my test and figured out WD is not capable to detect malware in ISO files that are packed into zip archive several levels deep.
Even though I enabled a setting in GPO for WD to scan archives up to 10 levels deep WD failed only because of ISO files.

As soon as I unpacked archives and ISO files WD detected a trojan that was FUD some 6 months ago, so that's something!

I've also installed Kaspersky into VM however Kaspersky doesn't support recursive scanning of external hard drives attached to VM which makes it useless for testing in a safe manner.
I was tempted to install Kaspersky to host system to compare it with WD and then stumbled upon the following:

Out of interest I clicked on links to see why the heck it is not intended for use and determined it's indeed not wise to use it.

    Hi all -

They have some good technologies, but it has been so politicized over the years that it's just not worth the effort.

Windows Defender or Norton 360 - USA based products.

Personally, I like and use Norton360 since it scans well into compressed archives.

    Really simple.

Please don't try to imply that only the USA is good enough.
Bitdefender is also produced in a democratic country governed by law not fear.

The personal data provided by users to Kaspersky can be processed in the following countries, including countries outside European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA): <snip>
Some data are non-personal, according to laws of certain countries. Regardless of the type of data and territory where data was received or processed,
Subject to applicable law, you may have the following rights: ...
    Kaspersky Privacy Policy | Kaspersky

Which therefore means your data is subject to law of countries listed, including countries like Azerbaijan or China.
What is considered personal in your country may not be personal in some other country.
You can contact Kaspersky to withdraw your consent and request data removal however that will happen according to law of those countries, not according to your country of residence nor according to country where Kaspersky's HQ's are located.

This is unlike which ever privacy policy within the US-EU-Swiss area which to my knowledge aren't subject to law of countries outside that area.
    More info:
    https://www.privacyshield.gov/servle...15t0000000QJdg

For ex. if you share data with a company in the US, your data may be shared to countries within that area, but not with countries outside of it and is subject to law regulated by that framework, not according to some law in China or Azerbaijan.

I never implied or stated that at all.

Just said that WD and Norton are two US based security products as an example.

Where did this thought of yours come from?

So I am planning to order kaspersky total from amazon usa site. Now do I have to make sure the kaspersky total I have installed currently on my laptop is kaspersky total USA region? How would I find this out? I am pretty sure it is because I had kaspersky total installed while I was in the US.

So it doesn't matter where I am located now right? Just as long as the kaspersky total in my laptop is USA region, then it is fine?

I am currently out of the US now so want to make sure I can order kaspersky total from amazon US site and then activate the code while outside the US. It should work fine? I want to know has anyone here bought kaspersky total and activated it while outside the US with kaspersky already installed on their laptop but their subscription was expiring and want to renew?

People mention how windows defender is good enough.

But what if you click on something or download something but you are not 100% sure if it is malware or virus free. Wouldn't kaspersky total do a better job than windows defender? Imagine clicking on those youtube comments and it is malware/virus. Kaspersky total would protect you more than windows defender there right?

It's a bold decision to use Russian antivirus software

At the moment, my kaspersky total is going to expire pretty soon. I do not want to renew it through kaspersky total because they are charging over $100 for it which is very expensive. Now at the moment I'm outside the US. I do see that I could buy kaspersky total for $20 or so on amazon.com
it will be an illegitimate key Kaspersy will know which keys are bad and after time they will revert your pro version back to free.
