Unable to run full scan on Windows Defender

I am unable to run a full scan on Windows Defender - the scan runs extremely slowly (only a dozen files per minute) and often hangs. The issue isn't that I have too many files - I've used only half of my available space and full scan worked perfectly well before I upgraded to Windows 10. Quick scan functions normally. How can I solve this issue?

Try running a SFC to see if there's anything that needs fixing. Be sure to run it 3 times since it doesn't always fix everything the 1st or 2nd time.

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

Another option would be to do a repair install.

This tutorial will show you how to do a repair install of Windows 10 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything.

SFC scan does not repair WD, as far as I can tell, never did restored mine (multiple scans).

You could try restarting in Safe Mode and attempting to run the scan, although Windows Defender is not a very good antivirus so you might as well download Avast now if you want a free one that's actually decent. Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 Forums
