I got malware from a link in Edge browser

I was checking out several links that come up when opening Edge.
On one of them I got a screen stating that that windows security detected malware and to call an number.
I could not find a way to close that window and did a hard shutdown of my PC.
Is there another way to close a suspicious window?
After I restarted the PC, everything was back to normal.
I am sorry, I do not remember which link it was.

It's a scam to get access to your pc don't call any number worth running a virus scan it's normally a fake web page with nothing on the pc

Thank you for the quick reply.
Yes, I did figure that it was a scam, but I could not close the page without shutting my PC manually.
Is there another way to do that?
I tried the esc button, but that did not work.
Also, why would Windows Defender or Malwarebytes not have intercepted this malware?

Because it was probably not malware.

Check at Edge, Settings, Cookies and site permissions, Notifications, Allow and if you don't want pop-ups from any site listed there, click the three dots then Block or Remove.

With that window open, I could not click on anything, each time I clicked on "no" the page renewed itself.
It seemed that a manual shut down was the only option.

But now can you check for Allowed Notifications where I indicated?

    Hello @Johannes

Along with the excellent recommendations above, have you considered employing the Edge extensions uBlock Origin and Malwarebytes Browser Guard? Both work well in concert and could have blocked the scam and protected you well.

As to why the threat wasn't caught - new malware needs to be reported so as to become part of the protection base. So far the details above are not enough to make an actionable report. URL? IP address? Phone number?

It's much like reporting a crime to law enforcement.

Help me understand, you were on a website with Edge and several links were on that website ?

Another way to close a window is to use Task Manager to end the task. Also, if malware is suspected immediately disconnect from the internet and shut down.

It was one of those picture links.
I think I tried to access the task manager also, but I am not sure if I did or not.
I shall try the task manager the next time.
