Do we really need to buy anti-virus/anti-malware software? (e.g. F-Sec

    Hello

Do we really need to buy anti-virus software for Windows 10?

Or can we just use whatever comes built into Windows10? (i.e. "Windows Defender", yes?)

e.g. I have been using "F-Secure Safe" for the last 3 years, and it doesn't get in the way and it seems to have worked fine.
But they want to charge me £79.99 (incl. VAT) to renew for 1 year, to cover both my devices. My original subscription in 2019 cost me quite a lot less (£41.99).

What do the experts on this forum recommend?

    Hello @ship69,

There are MANY threads on this Forum that discuss this topic. At the end of the day, it is really down to personal choice of what you want from the Antivirus.

Windows Security [ Microsoft Defender, formerly Windows Defender ] has come a LONG way over the past few years and is now VERY good and more than capable. Unlike other AV software, it does NOT throttle your Internet connection, or give FALSE Positives like other AV's may.

From what I have read, Microsoft Defender works quite nicely with Malwarebytes.

For added security in case of infection, it is STRONGLY recommended that you regularly create a System Image along with the addition of backing up important data that you do NOT want to lose such as Folders, Files, Photos, etc, BOTH to an external drive.

    I hope this helps.

IF you do want to buy AV/firewall, I recommend Bitdefender Internet Security.
I've been using it for 9 years... the price for 3 devices has always been $30 - $35
Their website always says this is a sale price, but that's just marketing. It's always the same $30-$35
THIS year it was $26.74, and in 2020 it was $57.99 for two years, or $28.99 a year.

Bitdefender Internet Security - Internet Security Software

The program itself has 13 modules, which do... everything.
Honestly though, I have 10 of them turned OFF. I only use...

    Antivirus
    Firewall
    Threat Defense

from this forum i have learnt that an 3rd party AV (paid) is not necessary.
i have win defender , malwarebytes browser guard extension , and virustotal ,(when i feel paranoid) .
    never had a problem
