An AV is only as good as its virus definitions, and Microsoft update theirs two, three, or more times each day. Windows Update will only look for them once a day, but you can manually check for updates any time you like. You'll almost always find there's a new one ready to download.
I get two or three Defender updates automatically via Windows Update every day.
