Regardless of the form of the computer attack, at the browser level, please consider uBlock Origin (uBO), and I also use Malwarebytes Browser Guard (MBG) security extensions, and at the system level please consider a supplemental top tier, full-time, premium AV to complement (not replace) Microsoft's Defender.
    I have multiple tin-foil hats on ...

As well as Kaspersky Internet Security, which has a web page pop-up blocker option, also have browser extensions/addons ...
    UBlock Origin
    Adblock Plus
on browsers like Brave and Opera which also have their own built-in popup blocker (unlike the "common" mass popular browsers which have vested/commercial interests in allowing pop-ups !!)

Like other people are saying this would be a piece of cake to fix.....There was nothing wrong with his PC.....I myself would have just unhooked the internet cable then restarted the PC and problem solved then maybe if you want after that open the browser and delete all cookies.
