I use Microsoft Defender and it has worked well for me for as long as I have used it. In addition, though, I have a monthly maintenance plan I do during the week before Patch Tuesday which includes running Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
--- I just ran Microsoft Defender Offline scan before posting this. As expected, my laptop along with my desktop are fine.
--- Even though I expect successful results, I never skip doing so each month.

Plus, I have an Emsisoft Emergency kit on USB that I run once a year on my laptop & desktop.
It always asks me to be updated which I do.
