It's surely not easy to explain, but that was just a hint for the OP to google out for more

Something along stuff on these links:
    Safe Computing | Information Technology
Safe Computing | Information Security Office
Safe Computing Practices to Avoid Computer Viruses | Citizens One
All these links and more should be in a tutorial and there should be a quiz to pass before your can access the internet.

    I'll keep dreaming

Thank you both very much. I'm having trouble getting Defender Real Time to turn on in Security Settings. It says, "You're using other antivirus providers."
You need to go into Malwarebytes and toggle off "register with Windows security center" and Defender will turn back on.
If you have issues Come over to the Malwarebytes forums and I can assist you further over there.https://forums.malwarebytes.com/

From what I understand, Defender is the OPs primary AV - so this shouldn't be necessary - unless I missed something.

At this time, in my system tray there is a shield which says Windows Security. When I click on it, I'm on the Windows Security screen with all things checked except for Account Protection; I did not set up a Windows Account.

In Start, there is no Defender in Windows System. There is a separate Windows Security shield (not a folder) which opens to the same Windows Security page. I would like some sort of visual confirmation that Defender is, in fact, protecting my laptops. I believe Norton is now completely removed.

In Task Manager, I see Windows Security Notification, but neither there nor anywhere else do I see the word "Defender."

If you want to verify which anti virus is protecting your computer then:

click on start button and type "control panel" and open control panel
click on "Security and Maintenance" icon
click on "Security" dropdown icon and take a look at "virus protection" under "Security"

This is your active antivirus, which ever is protecting your PC at the moment.

Windows Search -> Windows Security > click Settings gear icon in lower left corner > Click
    Manage Provider under Security Providers:

    I see
    Antivirus:
    Microsoft Defender is turned on

    Firewall:
    Windows Firewall is turned on

In Manage Security providers, Malwarebytes is turned on, Defender is turned off. (how to turn it on?)
Windows Defender Firewall is turned on.
    Web Protection says "No Providers."

I'm shocked that this is such a hassle; I thought Defender was simply a Windows default protection that one could turn on or turn off. I have researched "how to turn Defender on," and there are complicated steps, youtubes, and 3rd party tools, all devoted to what I thought was just a standard fixture on Windows.

Get rid of/uninstall MalwareBytes and any other non-Defender security apps for now ----- just focus on getting Defender working first as the primary AV/firewall apps - this would be my KISS suggestion.

Otherwise you can first try to downgrade MB to the free version so it can't be your primary AV since it can only be run manually.

Just follow the instructions in post 32 if you want to turn Defender back on, its that simple. When Malwarebytes is registered in Windows security as the primary AV, Windows turns Defender off. If this doesn't fix it then you have bigger issues.
