Allowing an executable in the Firewall outbound rules (windows 10)

    Greatings,

I would like to change firewall rules. I would like outbound connections to be blocked if not specifically allowed. I can do that by going into the advanced rules of the firewall. However when I do, I cannot allow PaleMoon portable in the outbound rules because, probably, it's just an executable not a real program (it doesn't appear in the program list of the control panel and the executable's name is Palemoon-Portable.exe).

I'd like to know if there is a way to allow this portable version of PaleMoon in the outbound rules of the firewall. I could allow Waterfox but not PaleMoon Portable which hasn't been installed. If I cannot, I'll stick with the default firewall rules to keep my portable version of PaleMoon running.

    Thanks for your attention,

When you go to advanced firewall, right click on "outbound rules" node and select "new rule"
here you can search for portable executable.

Hi, you did everything correct except you selected wrong executable.
The correct one is located in the following location:
    Bin\Palemoon\palemoon.exe

You may also create additional rule to allow updater.exe in same location for palemoon updates to work.

Alternatively, use Sordum.org's Firewall App Blocker to create the block/allow rules for you. In my experience it's so much easier than navigating the Windows Firewall UI, especially for portable apps.

    Hope this helps...

    Thanks so much

I didn't understand at first, tried to type Bin/Palemoon in the Windows Explorer then went to appdata then I understood.

After having allowed the Palemoon.exe and the updater in

    D:\00 JEAN PHILIPPE INFO CAPTVTY\Pale Moon Portable\Bin\Palemoon

it works perfectly. I would have tried the Firewall AppBlocker if it hadn't.

Wonder how you know this, thanks to both of you anyway.

There is often a disconnect between Microsoft's programmers and its UI teams. They just don't seem to connect/communicate these days for our benefit. (Or it's deliberate... who knows?)

As a result, many third-party utilities have appeared, trying to sort the disconnect between two apparently different mindsets.

Firewall AppBlocker is just one of many (hundreds?) of similar examples of third-party utilities helping us do what Microsoft isn't willing or able to.
