Thanks for the information - OK, no more wholesale registry cleaning... BTW: I always have it do a backup first, just in case, but I'm glad I've never had to figure how to replace a screwed up registry!
So, when it comes to registry - Just say NO!
@GracieAllen
Another vote for Windows Security and Malwarebytes.
I use CCleaner as well (an older portable version). As for the registery cleaner, I do run it sometimes. Once in a blue moon when Edge updates, the reg cleaner will find a couple things. I simply let it 'Fix' them, and have never had an issue. Otherwise it finds nothing.
The one thing I don't use is the Duplicates Cleaner, portion. Be careful of that.
(Quoted from CCleaner) "We recommend that you don't delete any duplicates located in C:\Windows or C:\Program Files; some programs on your PC are likely to need these to run properly." CCleaner Link below.

Good luck, Take care.
Check out Malwarebytes Browser Guard. It will block bad things in the browser before they load in your system. Its FREE.

I also use Macrium Free to backup my systems to an external disk so if I get infected I can restore my system in 15min.

Don't go overboard with your security, just use Window Defender augmented with Configure Defender ( this makes Defender as good or better than any paid option imo) an adblocker such as UBO, and a good backup up solution such as Macrium or Aomei. You could also have a on demand scanner such as Emsisoft Emergency Kit, Malwarebytes or Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, do a scan once a month and your good to go.
Excellent... I've run the duplicate finder in CCleaner but would never let it touch anything to do with the system. Sometimes on other drives it finds things I've erroneously gotten duplicates of.
For backups I was using Macrium and changed to Easus TODO.
I'll take a look at Malwarebytes Browser Guard...
So, mostly the built-in Windows stuff with a couple add-ons for browsers, and good backups...
I could give you an entire list - but of course, that wouldn't be simple :)
I'd recommend sticking with WD (Windows Defender) as would many others in this forum but if you are desperate for more security, think about using Avast or Malwarebytes
