Great posts @Fabler2. I would actually be very tempted to use the Malwarebytes for Chrome extension myself but, as all my security software is AVG, I also use their browser extension. I might try using the Malwarebytes one beside it though if the two brands will play nicely together.

@james 1093 Great to hear that you seem to have kicked this issue into touch! Great perseverance and determination!

Regards to all in this thread.

Just a quick follow up.. things are certainly better. The persistent and repeating popups have stopped but about 6-7 times over the last few days Malware Bytes (the free trial) has shown a popup saying somethings been blocked.. Once (at least) when the internet wasn't being browsed. Can these alerts be switched off?
So far I haven't installed Malwarebytes for Chrome extension. I did Google for it and found something that offered a You Tube video on how to install it. But when i clicked it, instead of playing a video it said "You're Almost Done" then wanted a click on a puzzle icon then click a pin.. it was weird like *it* was the virus.. I quit at that point. It wasn't the normal download & run app.
Did you folks get that if you installed it ?

I don't know about MB but I can switch off notifications in AVG Internet Security, paid version, though I leave them on as I also use their browser extension and the uglies get stopped at that level, if ever needed. Chrome also offers strong protection using Enhanced protection in Settings>>Security. It does sound as if those 6 or 7 times are responses to a consistent event that you might be able to monitor and identify, even though not browsing. On the otherhand, could it be a piece of software that attempts to update or call home in some way that MB doesn't like? Does MB have logs of incidents that you can view to identify the exact cause?

Better safe than sorry. I like AVG Online Security extension. Works a treat. You could try that for your browser. It works independently of A/V software and you get some good feedback / control capability with it.

Good progress has been made so far so keep digging into the MB popups and see if you can discover what the triggers are. Let us know how this goes.

    UPDATE
Thinking more on this, it could be a false positive with MB blocking a legitimate auto-update attempt from a piece of software you use. Are you using any one in particular when this happens? You could try replacing MB with AVG free which is very highly respected and maybe less sensitive about the same type of event, whilst still offering strong protection.
