Icalcs, because virtually every ransomware out there uses SYSTEM privileges.
Protected storage works the same way, but you can use apps instead of users.

Again, Norton is a complete security system, not just an AV and for more cybersecurity, it has a built-in ransomware protection. Norton is not bloated, if you don't like some features (some do), you just have to turn them off. This is the case of password protection, backup, toolbar or IE stuff (see in Ccleaner). As a bonus, the app internal firewall allows you to block incoming or outgoing connections.

I'm not trying to convince you, Norton convinced me many years ago with their easy to use UI (similar to old Defender UI).

As for Avast, it has notifications that can be turned off in settings and with an account, you get more parameters to deal with when you login to their website. The free trial does not have this option. This lightweight package has less features. It lasts 24 hours without an account.

Copy in the url bar for automatic download: norton.com/latestns

Unless you are multimillionaires, chances to get caught are low. For ransomware, we're adding the following command lines for additional protections:
    Code:
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /v "DisallowRun" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f
    Code:
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\DisallowRun" /v "1" /t REG_SZ /d "PsExec.exe" /f
    Take care,

I use DNS Protection and Anti-phishing software.

The best way to never get ransomware it to automatically prevent access to Phishing sites and emails at the source.

On the machine Windows Defender / Smartscreen and Malwarebyte

Any good anti-virus program will have anti-ransomware protection, so a separate program for this function is not needed. There are so programs strictly for this but their not really needed imo.

So the question should be "What is your favourite anti-virus?"

Never used Eset but from what I've read it provides above average protection if configured correctly. Basically the HIPS and Firewall should not be left on the default settings. Did you tweak any settings?

I just make regular offline image backups. Get ransomed, two fingers up to them, restore clean image.

That's a good policy for sure. I also make backup copies everytime a cummulative update is out. Just 4 minutes under Macrium Reflect for my OS partition.
