Hyphens are used by DOS and Powershell. I only referred to them as real to distinguish them from the en dash in the command.

    en dash

    "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" –SignatureUpdate

    hyphen

    "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate

    ok, thanks
I don't recall seeing the dash in any of my experiments but I will try creating a command line by typing direct rather than using cut and paste.

Incerdentally, I don't use notepad, I use a propper text editor - EditPad Lite

You can still use cut and paste, just replace the character that looks like a hyphen with a real one or use the following in Task Scheduler.

    "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate

I have an"object" on my keyboard that puts a short horizontal line at waist level into a string of text. But many programms convert this into a long horizontal line, which is not an "object" on my keyboard.
That generally only happens if there are two short horizontal lines one after the other. Many applications automatically convert them into a single long horizontal line.

    Benn,

    That's an em dash.
