How Often To Schedule Malwarebytes Scans?

I have Malwarebytes Premium and for some reason it started doing a threat scan every day. I thought this was overkill and remember someone saying once that scanning too much was taxing on the pc's components - particularly the hard drive. I may have this wrong, and assuming it's not such a problem now I have a new solid state HD.

Anyway, I re-scheduled threat scans to weekly. As I use the desktop pc every day, mainly web browser, is this the correct frequency of scanning?

Also, I see there are other scans available, eg. Quick Scan. Should I be scheduling these instead, or as well as the Threat Scan? If yes, how often?

Would be grateful for any advice on correct scheduling of scans on Malwarebytes to suit my needs, as I don't want to over or under do things. Thanks for any help.

I would say daily scans are fine, weekly also fine. You have premium so I assume you have the real time protection turned on. That should catch any bad programs that are running or start to run. The scanner mostly looks for files that could run and create problems, not necessarily running. I don't have premium but have MB, I run scans after heavy usage, but if I am not doing much, I won't run a scan. The scan only takes 5 minutes so I run the scan and go and make some coffee, it's done when I get back.

    Hello @woodbine,

I too use Malwarebytes Premium. And it has been running a scan once daily, at first bootup, for a number of years.

Very fast, and never a problem.

I don't think you have anything to worry yourself over, regarding undue wear. Just my personal opinion.

    Best of luck.

Daily scan is overkill. If it were me I would only do a scan once a month, let the real-time protection do its job.

    Hello @woodbine

Few knowledgeable MB4 Premium users invoke the Quick Scan anymore due to the vast hardware performance improvements that perhaps makes a Threat Scan the better routine scan choice. Instead, many opt for just the Threat Scan alone. @Digmor Crusher is rightfully considered a very advanced user and knows when a Windows system appears compromised. Yet with badware at its current level, uber sophisticated or nation state malware could slip passed some defenses.

Paranoia of computer malware is certainly understandable and a Quick/Startup scan may meet the fears of some. I would allow the default weekly Threat Scan to remain as the MB4's databases (Update package versions) will have updated perhaps many dozens of times in that default time frame. Including Rootkits need not be undertaken unless a routine Threat Scan found legitimate badware.

I would ask any reader to also please consider scans with Jérôme Boursier's Malwarebytes AdwCleaner in their weekly routines.

One Custom Scan is fine when MB4 Premium is first installed/run. Afterwards, maybe once - maybe twice per year.

As for frequently scanning an SSD based system - most SSDs include hardware based/embedded wear leveling strategies making accelerated wear concerns minimal.

    YMMV,

    Cheers

I have my AV set to do a full system scan once a week since it takes over 3 hours to do one. It gets run overnight after I retire for the evening. Since I am using a subscription package, it also does scans during the day in the background, if the system is idle. It also does updates whenever they are needed.
