I have a couple of Windows 10 machines and understand an updated version 21H2 is due very soon.
I use Kaspersky Security Cloud free on one of them and wondered if this should be disabled when updating. With the usual monthly updates I keep Kaspersky running.
Got a new Notebook Friday, came with Win10, during setup it was updated to Version 21H1 Build 19043.1288. Then I checked again and got Win11 Version 21H2 Build 23000.258.
I also removed all the included free? McAfee security and updated Windows Defender, haven't had any issues with it on all my machines.

21H2 update is not a cosmic one, only the build number gets changed. Do the same if you're not disabling Defender in Gpedit. If Defender is OFF, you'll get security intelligence updates by turning Kaspersky OFF. This is not what we look for when disabling Defender.
You may also try the cab file (KB5003791) to force 21H2 now.

NB: Defender is always OFF here and there are no traces of security intelligence updates in WU history nor anywhere else. We get Tuesday's patch manually from MS catalog.
On my 3 systems I have Norton 360 and Malwarebytes Premium running always and never had a problem with updates.

I'll probably keep Kaspersky on whilst doing the update. I will do a backup beforehand.
I originally started off with version 1909 and wanted to wait as long as possible before updating to another version, but when version 21H1 came I had to do so. Although the machine said I had updated successfully I was missing several intermediate updates, "servicing stack" or something similar. In the end I did a clean instal of 21H1 via USB with no apparent issues. This all occurred soon after the release of 21H1.
Those "servicing stack" updates are necessary. They are updates to the updater.
If you skip too many of those, then when you do decide to update, you won't be able to.
As long as you use backup software, you'll be fine just taking the updates when MS releases them.
Most of the regulars on here, just make a new full OS image backup, right before patch Tuesday.
