Also, please consider security extensions for a top tier browser.

Am I right in thinking that 10 has built in security (anti virus??) and I don't require any additional security.
Do you need side airbags in your car? No, you do not, but they sure come handy at times.
No AV will protect you 100%, additional protections try to cover those little security holes.
Like anti-keylogger, anti-exploit, even something as simple as cleaning caches can help.

Imagine AV as a security guard. It is preferable to stop the bad person from entering your home.
DNS is the first line of the defense, then comes the browser and the email client, then your AV.

    I also use....

    SUPERAntiSpyware (free)
    SpywareBlaster (Free)

It would be nice if MD offered an easy taskbar enable/disable button. Instead having to open several windows to turn it off/on.

    Here's another perspective,

We prefer much more Norton AV + that appears to be stronger ($10-14 /year). It has an easier GUI, scans web activities, blocks some download (community reports), comes with a backup partition, has some cleaning stuff and a few more features.

Once Norton is installed, we turn off the Defender heavy infrastructure the way large corp's does via Gpedit, Security Center and a single cmd line to disable real-time monitoring. As a bonus and for some a therapy, there is no need to get WU to work.

Just check in the Norton app manually for updates, about the same cadence for Defender 10-12 patches /day..

For the rest, we set Adguard DNS in the router, we have a bootable stick of Win 10 and a Linux Mint one for emergency and we make a restore point now and then in Control Panel.

    Take care,

Actually Woodbine I run the Eset Smart security suite and it is very good at catching anything like ransomware and guarding my banking details. You will find it does shut off the option in the Windows security for toggling for ransomware. I have had no problems having said that nothing can compare with being cautious when on line eh?

I love Malwarebytes but this seems misleading, unless I’m missing something with their methodology. But I think this is some marketing guy trying to impress his boss.

    On the page they mention
We can only identify antivirus programs registered in the Windows Security Center
…which means “Microsoft Consumer” is going to have infinitely more datapoints in the pool since it’s the default and most users run vanilla. How many people run Microsoft Defender + Malwarebytes VS Norman + Malwarebytes? Cmon.…

…and I’m pretty sure that 1 datapoint I saw of G Data is me. 😅

The amount of missed PUPs, Malwarebytes includes as PUP everything. I consider Malwarebytes as PUP.

I use and recommend the comprehensive, open source Hard Configurator program to enhance Windows 10 built-in security: Homepage - Hard_Configurator It includes the Configure Defender tool, which is specific to Microsoft Defender and can be used alone if preferred: GitHub - AndyFul/ConfigureDefender: Utility for configuring Windows 10 built-in Defender antivirus settings.

Personally I use Avast One Essentials. While it might not be needed persae with Windows 10 Defender, I use it because sometimes it catches things Defender misses. Plus this is a free program.
