AdwCleaner 8.3 is now available

Version 8.3, which was in Beta for a time, is available at Major Geeks Download Malwarebytes AdwCleaner - MajorGeeks
and various other spots (Search: AdwCleaner 8.3 download).

It can be run from a shortcut with arguments /scan /path <your choice of folder>, will run in CLI and park its log in <your choice of folder>, and if so run, will NOT create and use a folder on C:.

As of the time/date of this post, and despite the lack of official attribution by the well meaning folk at Major Geeks (and others), Malwarebytes AdwCleaner v8.2.0.0 is still the current RTM/gold/release version.

Additionally, no official corporate authored & published Malwarebytes AdwCleaner Release Notes exist beyond v8.2.0.0

V8.3.0.0 should be considered an unannounced BETA. Also, v8.3.1.0 is an unannounced ALPHA. Although the (self declared Final) copy at Major Geeks appears to have high integrity, their source (and the developer's repository copy) appear to have been downloaded innocently from the AdwCleaner developer's French-based repository and may contain at least one minor error in file versioning.

Some of the above may change soon. In the meantime, please be reasonably careful.

AdwCleaner when run does not offer this unofficial upgrade

Mea culpa. I consider myself well and truly chastised.

I have trusted Major Geeks for so many years that when I happened to notice AdwCleaner 8.3 there, I assumed it was fine, and we all know where making assumptions leads.

In any case, I just thought members would like to know that there was a new version available. I would ordinarily wait for the program to announce an update, but his time I didn't.

It does work, and exactly as expected, and I've made a new discovery that applies to AdwCleaner 8.2 AND (the unofficial) 8.3 I've got now: If you make a shortcut to the executable and edit the target line of the shortcut's Properties so that after the path to the executable that's already there you enter /path <path to the folder you have your executable in>, running it from the shortcut will produce a CLI for a moment, and then go to the usual GUI. Hitting Scan then will do exactly what you expect it to do, and you'll find that (1) the log is in the folder whose path you specified, and (2) there's no new AdwCleaner folder on C:.

Example from my PC: "D:\Malware Tools\AdwCleaner\adwcleaner_8.2.exe" /path "D:\Malware Tools\AdwCleaner"

This whole adventure began with my noticing and being annoyed by the default behaviour of AdwCleaner when I first tried it the other day: by default it creates a new folder on C: and stores its logs and settings there, no matter where you parked the downloaded program file (AdwCleaner.exe) when you got it. If you use this tiny shortcut hack, the program will put its records where you want them, and if you have used the program before and there is still an AdwCleaner folder on your C: drive, you can transfer its contents to the folder where you keep the executable, and delete the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

The only possible stoppage to my perpetual learning process will be my death. My wife gets really tired of my telling her, "It's a bad day when you don't learn anything."

Yes, I will exercise caution, as I always have, but now I will exercise more caution when I pick up on new releases that haven't been released by the originators yet.
