Win10 update then Start Menu Critical Error virus different computers

May 23, Win10 updated on my desktop with lots of crapps I don't want (Xbox, weather, etc), and then when I hit the Start Menu button, I get Critical Error Start Menu corruption. After a couple of frustrating days of trying dozens of "solutions" posted by many people, I was able to get a beta version from Win7 times.
Now this morning on this laptop I get the same Critical Error. This is obviously a virus that Windows Defender did not catch.
Using Sysinternals Process Explorer, it tells me this message is part of Explorer.exe. I deleted it and used Run to reopen it. Same dilemma.
Does anyone have any insight, solutions, or comments as to why Microsoft does not have a solution that works for this? From what comes up when searching the internet, this has been a problem from a long time ago. I have always felt that allowing for automatic updates was a good idea with one's O/S, but considering that MS is abusing that by loading many unwanted and possibly corrupted apps, I no longer think it is a good idea.
Thanks for any help, comments, or insight. G-

What makes you think this is a virus rather than a technical fault?

    Have you run SFC?
    SFC-DISM - TenForumsTutorials

Have you scanned with Windows defender?

Denis, if it is a technical fault, and has some relationship to 20H2 then considering all the complaints on the internet one would think that MS would have found a solution that doesn't require a complete reboot of the O/S. Considering that this same Critical Error came up on my desktop just a week plus ago, and now it comes up on my laptop, it has the appearance of being a virus. I have run Defender, and SFC which gets to 100% and the command prompt closes without any indication of what it might have found.
Both computers have the Win10 version that MS installed on Win7 computers. Is that relevant? I don't know, but not too many months ago I was having to deal with the BSOD on the desktop. It required a complete install and many days of frustration. Here we go again.
You want me to believe that it is a "technical fault". Of what, these computers, the O/S? Considering the number of folks with this problem, one would hope that a simple solution would be found to repair it. Instead, doing a Repair Install as Megahertz suggests is a scorched earth approach that destroys everything to start over from the beginning. Another "We had to destroy the village to save it." solution.
Some people wonder if it is associated with an app. In the last install MS loaded this laptop with a lot of crapps (X-box, weather, etc.), none of which I want. Which one caused the Critical Error? I have tried to keep this laptop and my desktop free of things I don't use, and I'm not a user of social media, nor am I an internet surfer. I keep Defender up to day by having it download and update automatically, and the same for Win10.

SFC should not close its cmd window at the end. You were running it in a cmd window and not just by using a shortcut [because that could explain it closing, depending on just what the shortcut's target field was]?

    A Repair Install destroys nothing.
