Windows Security/Defender Turns off with 3rd Party Antivirus

Basically the title, I was told that windows security doesn't even operate when you have a 3rd party anti virus installed, or more so gets turned off. Is this true?

I thought windows security and kaspersky for example worked back to back.

    Thanks :)

Windows Defender will still update and allows periodic scanning with 3rd party AV installed. It's not totally disabled. This site explains it better than I can, Protect your PC with Windows Security alongside a third-party antivirus | Digital Citizen

    Norton LifeLock 22.21.5.44

Norton is not demolishing Defender, few instances are disabled or under control of Norton, such as AntiSpyware, periodic scan, firewall...

It is not possible to set Defender services to stop without Norton. All we do is to set Defender anti-virus in gpedit to enabled.
After restart services are stopped. Even if Norton controls the ball game, it is not a good idea, because WU doesn't like it.

It must be re-enabled before a CU or keeping Defender running the way Norton intends is better. Back to back like you say.

Default, Defender periodic scans will never occur with Norton.

We shouldn't play there, not even with the illusion to gain speed. Tested in 20H2 + Dev.

NB: We are disabling real time monitoring in regedit, plus the usual stuff in Windows security > App & browser control.

    That's about it.

These statements are widespread on the Web, but my experience is that Windows Defender doesn't need to slink off into the night when another protector shows up.

Some AVs work better than others alongside Windows Defender (WD). Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) works happily with WD, so long as it's set correctly. And it's not hard to set MBAM so that WD is not only not crippled, but continues to offer real-time protection. They work just differently enough not to get in each other's way.

These images are from my main computer. I have the same pair (WD and MBAM Premium) running on three PCs.

They do work together. I use Bitdefender, but yours will look the same, but will say Kaspersky.
The Firewall page will look similar.

Windows Security panels will show the AV (Bitdefender or Kaspersky) this way because the AV is registered with the Security Center. So is MBAM by default, but changing a single setting after installing makes it so that WD continues to run as though there were no other AV running.
