Defender will serve your needs adequately without AVG real-time. AVG as a passive on-demand is ok, if it gives an extra little piece of mind.

I was a long time AVG user going back to Windows 2000. I suppose for lack of interest in trying something else I continued using it on XP and Windows 7 for several years. But it seemed that AVG was becoming a bit too aggressive in promoting their paid version and there were some other issues I can't remember. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows which was replaced by Windows Defender when I upgraded to Windows 10. I have seen no reason to change.

Hey, Matt, I see that Avast ranked 6th, AVG ranked 8th in that one specific listing. Some time ago, during my Windows 95/98/98SE days, I used and was really impressed with both Avast and AVG (and Avira). I had to give them up because of some sort of DLL conflict generated by - I never knew what.
Numerous sources indicate Windows 10 Windows Defender has really stepped up the plate! I guess the answer to OP's question can be: W10 WD is the way to go, just use AVG on-demand scan as 2nd opinion.

If it's the list of the Free ones posted in #13, Defender is not "technically" free. You pay for a license to use the OS and Defender is part of the package.

I will just stick withWindows Defender.
Most 3rd party antiviruses are notorious of slowing down the system.
Also,Windows Defenderautomatically turn offs itself if it detects an another antivirus.

Not totally correct. Defender can and does co-exist and run with many other AVs. There was an issue several years ago, but that has generally gone away. Defender now runs alongside other, real-time. Example..... I have Defender and Malwarebytes running together. I'm not addressing any potential performance issues here, just the technical aspect of co-existence.
