+1 for repair it yourself. As for Lenovo, their daughter company (Medion) makes reasonably priced laptops that don't have any problems with WiFi (or with anything else, if you ask me). That's just because they use the Intel WiFi instead of the stupid Qualcomm. My now 4 months old laptop also uses an 11th Gen Intel CPU. For what I have paid, all the competing brands were still trying to sell the 10th Gen back then, or worse, a stupid AMD Ryzen 5 that performs even slower and yes, mine has four USB ports whereas the other choices typically had only three and no, my RAM is not soldered directly to my motherboard so just trust me, I know what's good!

I forgot to mention, Windows Update does not cause my laptop to explode.

"... I am thinking mainly of memory locations (HD folders) which might be a place to remove data and store outside..."
I can only speak for Windows 7, however, there are a number of folders dedicated to storing temporary files, at school, cannot list them all right now: Windows Recent, Windows Prefetch, User Appdata Roaming [somewhere], Windows temp, and some more folders related to some 3rd party programs and utilities.
