Has anyone heard of Hotspot Shield

Has anyone heard of an app called HotSpot Shield, I'm guessing it is a VPN. It showed up on my Fujitsu Q704 convertible after I allowed a bunch of updates to be done after I purchased it. Wondering if it is any good or not, or if it is a umm, well, bs app.

Also I am an owner operator for over the road trucking and mainly use this laptop/convertible for the truck instead of bringing my brand new macbook air m1 with and risking damage to a $1200 laptop, is a VPN really needed?

Do you have any reason to hide your internet usage if not then you don't need it

VPN's are a good layer of protection, especially in mobile applications. They also afford you good privacy first and foremost

Maybe if your a journalist living in a repressive regime then it's probably a good idea.
Maybe you don't want your ISP to know that you go to pornhub
Maybe download tons of illegal torrents.

Why you might not want to use a VPN

Who do you trust more a ISP that is governed by the Laws of your country or VPN provider that swears that they don't keep logs and sell all the data that they collect about your browsing habits.

Your internet is slow as it is now and will more than likely get slower

Do you do any online banking because most online banking will be blocked when trying to connect with a VPN

Do you use Netflix or a similar Video streaming sites because they are blocked too

after I allowed a bunch of updates to be done
    - just wondering where those updates came from and what was updated. Certainly not Windows Updates, so I'm curious as to what else might have been delivered along with this VPN program...

There are far better free ones e.g. Windscribe.

    Agree with dalchina and Callender.

Windscribe will give you a minimum amount of usage each month for free, so you can try it out. If you like it, and find it's necessary, you can purchase a subscription. The nice thing about Windscribe is they don't limit the number of devices you can use it on. Most others do.
