Looking for a Good Software Firewall for Windows 10

    Hi all

I am not so happy with the built-in Firewall that comes with Windows 10,
can anyone recommend a good third party Firewall?

    Thank you

Maybe if you give some details of what you are not happy with, members here who are well versed in Firewalls and the inherent security can offer solutions. It may turn out you can tweak a few settings to overcome what you're not happy with, and stay with Windows native firewall.

It totally depends upon your ability to understand and configure a decent firewall. If you don't understand such things then stick with the built in firewall.

If you only need to block/unblock apps internet access then I use OneClickFirewall. Download link near the bottom.

I used to use the Firewall that comes with ESET Smart Security suite,
it allows you to define either Allow or Block rules,
you can do it per Program, per Port, and per other things, and even a combination of these conditions.
    Its GUI is quite good.
It's a good firewall, yet the only disavantage of it is that ESET wants you to pay a monthly subscruiption fee, instead of a one time fee.

That's what I'm not so happy with :)

So I am looking for either a Freeware, or a Paid (one time) program,
with good interface, and ability for creation and of rules, and rule priority.

    Can anyone recommend?

I have used Comodo free firewall for years and it has never let me down....Go to "personalfirewall.comodo.com" and download the orange "Free firewall" button.....Then during setup make sure and look at all tabs so as to not download anything you don't want.

And if you missed something just go to Programs and features after install and delete anything it snuck by you.

It has many adjustments from novice to expert....And I personally love the sandbox or as Comodo calls it "Containment" which works great on all browsers.

    @spaceman5

If you go search for ex. "top 10 windows firewalls" you'll find more or less same list.
I recommend you to try more than one in VM.

Your primary criteria to determine which one is better is at a minimum this:
    1. Support for filtering based on user account to prevent malware going out by using or impersonating another or elevated account
    2. Provides some starting rules to be able to block outbound traffic and thus block "phone home" scenarios
    3. Support to filter rules based on various rule parameters ex. to find "weak" rules
    4. Supports exporting rules to be reused in case of crash or OS reinstall
    5. Logging or monitoring of traffic, if possible filtering support.

Interface features are also important, ex. easy to use and shiny looking UI, but primary goal is flexibility and configuration.

You can also search for "must have features" online, and may end up reading articles such as this one:
5 Firewall Features you Must-Have | Check Point Software

Nothing specific, but knowing what determines a good software firewall is a good thing.
