Wi 10 Defender is off, and greyed out. Command Line does not work...

    Greetings:

The next issue in Win 10 20H2 Build 19042.804 (The Problematic Version):
Out of the blue, today my system booted up with Defender TOTALLY turned off, and the "Force Turn On" command line in elevated CMD ... did nothing after reboot.

There's no third party AV or other, it worked "fine" (see other posts about Defender by me) yesterday.

I wanted to install (actually i DID) PDF reader, I expected the normal crap (program blocked despite signed, program blocked from writing, program not allowed to use folder this and that, ..., the usual issues I get, and are not addressed by MS)...

... no... NOITHING of the sorts.

    Alarm bell.

    Check Defen... AH CRAP.
All turned off, greyed out, no way to get it up again.

"Perform a restore", "Do a clean boot" and other ideas that would undo ALL up to the part that i have a base Windows intallation.

Now, if you understood the hell I've been through in the past month, almost now 2 months... I refuse to go through this all again.

I cannot enter Safe Mode for one, as, for whatever reason that Windows now does this, it totally fails to find my old keyboard: a LogitechK120, of of the MOST base keyboards out there.
Not even when I replug it into another USB.

    In short:
I am looking for a FORCED activate command that does not undo all I've been through.

If I have to re-install Windows again, I will go homicidal...

I hope anyone can help me with my issue...

    Thank you.
    Xog.

    Hi, Tutorial:
How to Turn On or Off Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 10
includes reg file in Option 2.

    Otherwise general searches for
    defender greyed out

give e.g. this which is pretty close to what you're asking for, but of course may or may not help:
Windows Defender Settings Grayed Out and Real-time Protection Disabled - Winhelponline
and various thoughts if you scan patiently through
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0-d8d7b4e09edd

where some even seem to have found that it started working all by itself again.

Tweaking.com's free repair tool offers e..g repairs to restore services, should that be an issue.

Hopefully given your apparently traumatic history you are routinely and regularly using disk imaging, have a program monitoring the state of your disks, and have a scheduled System Restore point created e.g. daily.

It might help respondents if you showed WHAT is greyed out-a screenshot.

Download "MD Enable.bat" and run as admin, the computer will restart within a minute!

    Thank you both.

I wonder, why does my PC suddenly go entirely ape since 20h2?
I mean, yes I had issues before with File Explorer (over several versions and PC's) starting at I believe, Win XP, which has not been fixed, or other things that were annoying, or the "missing MSVCR and similar things, though installed and present, but what I run into lately is just...
    Mindboggling to say the least...

Are these issues, version bound, or is there something else going on?

I've asked over SO many forums, but never I gotten a decent solution...

    Thank you, both:

I will let you know if it, if at all, worked...
Seems my PC has gotten "The Ghost in the Machine" (Dr. Alfred Lanning, I Robot)...

    - - - Updated - - -

Bat nor Reg file did any good.
Tried to add it manually, no result...

Going to dive deeper into the links given.

    Funny, this:
Makes me wonder if I even still have Defender....

Along those lines, I wonder why some people frequently post problems whilst many don't.

I've been running 1903 since a couple of months after it came out. I can leave a PC for some days, just resuming from sleep- no issues.

Hard to imagine why - without some sort of intervention whether it be virus or programmatic- Defender would turn off suddenly.

You could try a System Restore point of course, if you have one.

Also as a matter of routine given repeated problems
    a. check your disk(s) e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (SSDs too)
    b. run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt

Look for a process named Antimalware Service Executable on the Processes tab in Task Manager- its file name is MsMpEng.exe, and you’ll see this on the Details tab.

That is just the result of Security Center being disabled, usually done by privacy tools.

If you've used anything like that, they usually have a 'reset to default' option.

    I know, sir.

I tried a ton of things now, nothing yet.
I even used a tool to make the RegEdit having FULL power, no use.

    Continuing to search deeper...

Yes, which would undo all I got so far, resetting my system to base windows installation.
    Not going there AGAIN, sir...

Don't think you have understood what I said at all. And no, that's NOT the effect.

Let's make this simple for you.

Have you used any utilities to tweak settings or disable telemetry, for example?

Some have on/off switches for a variety of things.
Resetting those to default simply changes those settings.

    It's easily reversible.,

    It does NOT
    - uninstall all your programs
    - reset all your hacks.

    Hope that's clear,

I'm guessing you've applied a variety of hacks and tweaks possibly without due backups and it's caught up with you.

    I'll wish you good luck.

If you mean by hacks illegal things... NO!
Just to get this out of the way.

If you mean with hacks Win tweaks like setting up Taskbar for easy access to various tools, then yes, but that was now about 1 to 2 months ago.
Haven't done anything that is even remote to tweaking.

Unless if you take that blasted Defender acting up with it's constant annoyances: Yes, allow X to run, no, X is safe, YES, DAMMIT, X can use the darn #%$%@ Documents, YYYEEEESSSSSS I said it was OK to have it used the BLASTED Documents just a minute ago!!!!!!!! and more fun stuff.
EDIT: It was todays lack of frustration in that matter that warned me something was quite off...
The fact that Defender did not ruin my day as it used to, make me check Defender... :S

I did not install or use anything program altering stuff in the past week.
Yesterday my day was filled with my primary OCD (I am autistic, Aspergers, and I have this quite bad): MUSIC.
Been the whole day blasting music, cut of from reality...
Actually, the past three days were pure music.

Unless Youtube or VLC does "strange things" to one's PC then no, nothing out of the ordinary took place.

Yesterday I logged out, all was fine, Defender was still there (I even did a minor scan on C and checked for updates: nothing was out of the ordinary).
Today then, when i wanted to install Acrobat Reader, I noticed Defender not doing it's usual nonsense when I want to install or modify something (read first post).

So, I fear, lately there has been no Restore Point, and my backup with Acronis also dates back a while now, being that a backup of the first days...
