Privacy Error
I apologise now for what is by necessity, a lengthy post.
I have a problem with accessing some websites when I get an error:
“Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from Virgin Media - Official Site (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards). Learn more
NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID
Virgin Media - Official Site normally uses encryption to protect your information. When Google Chrome tried to connect to Virgin Media - Official Site this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be Virgin Media - Official Site, or a Wi-Fi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Google Chrome stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.
You cannot visit Virgin Media - Official Site right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.”
Virgin Media is just one site. Others include:
bt.com
bbc.co.uk
itv.com
channel5.com
channel4.com
news.sky.com
national-lottery.co.uk
amazon.co.uk
amazon.de
Bizarrely, I can access amazon.fr, amazon.it and amazon.es.
I can also access skysports.com but not sky.com
Observations:
1. My PC has been working perfectly for several years. It is only since I changed ISP to Virgin Media that I have these problems.
2. It only happens to my PC. Both my Android tablet and Android phone are OK.
3. Everything is fine if I access via a VPN.
Following advice received so far I have tried:
1. Windows 10 is up to date
2. The PC clock and date are fine
3. Incognito mode gives the same results
4. Using Edge gives same results
5. Switching off Defender and firewall give same results
6. I downloaded Brave browser. With some of the above sites it returns the same error message. On the others it returns a login page for SMART DNS Proxy.
7. Run Malwarebytes and nothing found.
This only started when I switched to Virgin Media so I have asked for help on the Community Forum, by phone and even had an engineer to the house. They say it’s nothing to do with them as my tablet and phone are working so it must be the PC. I maintain that my PC was fine until it was plugged into the Virgin Media service so they have to be part of the problem.
I’ve totally run out of ideas now and would welcome any suggestion to resolve this situation please.
