Thanks. As mentioned above, I only have average IT skills which includes nothing at all about certificates, so forgive me if this is not correct. As I am able to access all sites by going through a VPN, doesn't that indicate that there isn't a problem with the certificates?

Yes, but VPN can insert its own certificate, just like some antiviruses do.
When you access the webpage, check the certificate, click on the lock.

When I try to access normally, the certificate shows as invalid and issued by COMODO. If I go through the VPN it is issued by GlobalSign so I guess this proves what you were saying about being issued by the VPN.

The certificate presumably has always been the invalid one by COMODO which passed OK by my last ISP, so why will it not get past Virgin and, more importantly, what can I do about it please?

Do you have any Comodo software installed on your PC? Antivirus, cleaner, browser extension?

None that I am aware of. The only antivirus I use is MS Defender and I have CCleaner by Piriform. I ran a search on the word COMODO but it drew a blank.

In that case I would try to reset certificates as mentioned before or to perform a repair upgrade.

You're most welcome. Let us know the results of the Eset scan.

    Another thought, could you open an Administrative Command Prompt and type or copy & paste;

    Code:
    ipconfig /all
+ return and post the results in the thread.

Be careful to redact or remove your 'Physical Address' mac info. Every connection will have a unique mac address, be sure to clear all of them.

The fault you're describing could be the result of a faulty DNS entry and that is why a VPN connection produces a successful connection.
Here is the report from the ESET scan:

I did try to run the ipconfig but the results only flashed up on the screen and immediately disappeared.

Eset scan looks very good, the wait was worth it.

To double check that it got everything.

    Run AdwCleaner
    Download AdwCleaner 8.1.0
    Download AdwCleaner
    Downloads - AdwCleaner - ToolsLib
    https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    Click Scan Now
Click on Quarantine for all it finds.
    Reboot.
Please Copy & Paste the contents of that logfile with your next reply.

"I did try to run the ipconfig but the results only flashed up on the screen and immediately disappeared"

    1: Go to Start
    2: Click Run
3: Enter the following command: cmd /c ipconfig /all >Desktop\Ipconfig.log
(you can just copy and paste that long command into Run)

Hi jmatt and thanks for your continued support. I have run AdwCleaner and the logs are here:

I did try your suggestion for ipconfig but it did not work at all.

Hello and thank you for this suggestion. I am slowly working my way through suggestions that all the kind folk on here have come up with. Now that the ESET and Adw scans are out of the way I have moved onto this suggestion of yours but have fallen at the first hurdle!

I do not have "Command prompt (Admin)" in my options but, in a similar location on the drop down menu, I do have "Windows Powershell (Admin)". Do I select that and then follow the instructions given for "Command Prompt (Admin)" please?
