When I try to access normally, the certificate shows as invalid and issued by COMODO. If I go through the VPN it is issued by GlobalSign so I guess this proves what you were saying about being issued by the VPN.
The certificate presumably has always been the invalid one by COMODO which passed OK by my last ISP, so why will it not get past Virgin and, more importantly, what can I do about it please?
Do you have any Comodo software installed on your PC? Antivirus, cleaner, browser extension?
In that case I would try to reset certificates as mentioned before or to perform a repair upgrade.

Eset scan looks very good, the wait was worth it.
To double check that it got everything.
Run AdwCleaner

"I did try to run the ipconfig but the results only flashed up on the screen and immediately disappeared"
1: Go to Start
2: Click Run
3: Enter the following command: cmd /c ipconfig /all >Desktop\Ipconfig.log
(you can just copy and paste that long command into Run)
Hi jmatt and thanks for your continued support. I have run AdwCleaner and the logs are here:

I did try your suggestion for ipconfig but it did not work at all.

Hello and thank you for this suggestion. I am slowly working my way through suggestions that all the kind folk on here have come up with. Now that the ESET and Adw scans are out of the way I have moved onto this suggestion of yours but have fallen at the first hurdle!
I do not have "Command prompt (Admin)" in my options but, in a similar location on the drop down menu, I do have "Windows Powershell (Admin)". Do I select that and then follow the instructions given for "Command Prompt (Admin)" please?
