BitLocker encryption on USB flash drives?

I just got myself a 64gb USB flash stick drive and would like to encrypt it with BitLocker encrypting the ENTIRE drive which is the way I prefer it to be.

Is it safe to just encrypt the USB stick BEFORE adding data to it?

Or, will it also be fine to add the data first and then start fully encrypting the USB stick?

    Hello,

It's not an issue if data is already on it from my experience but as a personal order of operations, I like to encrypt it first. It also takes less time to encrypt if no files are on it when enabling bitlock. We also have larger USBs to do a local file back up for our users here. Also makes PC migration easy too hahah. Anyway, hope this helps and MAKE SURE your print a copy of your recovery key and put a digital copy on your OneDrive or somewhere else so it's in a few spots in case you forget your password.
