I suspect that my home computerhas been hacked. What do I do?

Hi, I was tired and clicked a few links that I should have not been clicking last night. After that my computer behaved vierdly. I do have some financial documents, imprtant docs and bank logins saved on this computer. What should I do? AV is Windows Defender. I also ran Kaspersky Virus Removal tool. Both found nothing, but computer has restrarted couple of times without me doing anything and mouse moved by itself. There were a couple of new files appeard on my desktop.

I am wondering if I should hire a computer forensic expert? Any input is appreciated. (Complete reinstall is the last resort for me).

Hi oce. I would be checking my logs if I were you and use VirusTotal to check links that you click (if they are downloadable).

I don't think hiring a computer forensic expert is a good option in your case. Computer forensic services are expensive. I looked around and found a computer forensic firm that actually lists the pricing for their services. I am guessing that they all charge similar, so you'd be looking at $4000 - $6000 price tag. If you prepare to pay this amount of money, then go ahead. Otherwise I personally would be looking at other options.

    Do you have a backup?

What kind of files appeared on your desktop?

Thanks mate. No, I don't have a backup unfortunatelly and not prepared to pay $5K. I didn't realise they are so expensive. I am planing on using Avira Secure Backup to backup of documents etc. and leave out scripts and executables, then reinstall. (Hate it but otherwise I would not be able trust this computer again). thanks again.

i doubt you were hacked simply by clicking a link, unless you specifically clicked anything on said link and downloaded the said files, i would run a few virus scans, can also run Malwarebytes and do a full scan advanced check for root kits and trojans. , could also down load hitman pro and run it as well.
