How can i keep real time protection OFF?

I have this game which ran fine for a year on W7. Then i upgraded to W10 and it no longer worked. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but every time it would give me an error and not start. I googled it and found the issue is the system will not allow a certain file and deletes it when u try and run the game. The problem is i can turn "real time protection" off which is the fix i found in many google searches, but the stupid protection will not stay off and when it turns itself back on it will just delete the file again. How can i turn that d@mn thing off for good? I have kept all protection off because of things like this since i have been online in the late 90s and while i have had some issue i have always been able to fix them and it's worth the occasional virus or whatever to eliminate problems like this. So if anyone knows how to turn the thing off permanently please clue me in. I AM supposedly admin on my PC and i even try checking the run as admin box in the file before installing but it seems W10 just doesn't want people to have control of their own PC.

It depends on which real time protection you refer to
Lets assume it is the included Defender
You may also need to look at allowing items through the Firewall depending on how the game is run

Hello hepme,

If you are referring to real-time protection for Microsoft Defender Antivirus, then you could try option 5 or 6 in the tutorial below to disable it. Beware that sometimes this may still get set back to default by a Windows Update, so you would want to double check this setting after any update.

I like what Macboatmaster posted about adding the files to the exclusion list to help prevent them from getting removed.

Hmmm....option 6 looks like the one that doesn't turn itself back on. Problem is i looked in my reg. but there is no "real time protection" sub folder to windows defender and no Dword called "DisableRealtimeMonitoring" anywhere. Is all that added via the reg file ? I opened the reg file with notepad and it shows that entire pathway so can i assume this is all added stuff that MS didn't want you to have? Just trying to wrap my head around this.

Correct. The registry entries are not there by default until the group policy is configured or added by the downloadable .reg files.

Brink - site administrator is the expert on these matters, but I would not go with the registry option.

I think Brink will agree, that the registry keys for Defender are protected on 10 and it appears to be that this is even more so, as new versions of 10 are released.

I do not think registry keys can be altered even if reports that it apparently has, I believe the system will revert the change.

I am not sure but I think Tamper protection will stop you making the reg change., even if you could, as I also think you will find that YOU do not have write permissions to the relative keys.

I would try the exclusions, but as I said Brink is the EXPERT

Agreed. I would try the exclusions first.

If you have Windows 10 build 18305 or higher installed, you will need to turn off Tamper Protection below to be able to disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

I DID turn tamper protection off but still with that and real time protection set to off it still deletes that file. At least thats what it did last time i tried to install the game when i did those settings. So maybe it didn't turn it back on, but somehow it did quarantine that file. Is it maybe some other app besides defender doing it? Well, i just installed the game again and before i try and run it wheich is when windows detects that file, i'll restart and see of those protection and tamper settings are still off b4 i try and run it. Thanks, i'll let u know how it goes.

I am not sure if you have or are going to try exclusions rather than turning off real time protection?

I wonder if Controlled folder access may be beneficial - as an alternative approach, if the file being blocked is - blocked because it will write to controlled folder

However be aware please that some prople have posted apparent problems in whitelisting on Controlled folder access

I think it may help considerably if you told us what the game and especially the file is that is being blocked

I'll have a look at that because i just rebooted the PC and while tamper is still off, real time protection is back on ! This is idiotic. So tired of this...
