Does google drive and one drive backup ransom ware encrypted files?

Thought just came to me, that if you setup those services to backup certain folders, and you get hit with ransomware, do those ransomware encrypted files get uploaded and now you have lost the backup on those internet drives?

yes, one drive or google drive does not scan files to determine desired purpose of a file.

they are also not revision control oriented so you can't traverse back in time.

A good workaround is to set up "File history" service and ensure one drive folder in not excluded.

Enable or Disable File History in Windows 10

What keeps file history files on the other drive from being corrupted by ransomware?
Do you have to manually unplug it?
Then you also have these 26 extra chars added to the name?, which makes it more painful to restore , if your hit with ransomware

Ransomware will infect any attached drive.

It's always a good plan to make frequent disk images and backups of files that change between disk images...and store them offline.

yes it is a good idea.
At a minimum all your personal files should be on a portable flash drive. IT is more of a problem for a large organization to be hit with ransomware than one individual. Now Linux users are being targeted also.

Seems online companies like google, or MS, dont have ransomware hitting them? Imagine if your google photos were destroyed.

You don't need to unplug anything, Just make sure target file history location on the external drive has restrictive file system permissions!

For example, set destination folder to allow access only by the following users:
    NT SERVICE\fhsvc
    Administrators

    Set owner to:
    Administrators

Now assuming you're standard user (which you ofc. should be), there is no way for ransomware to target your external location, only your one drive folder and user profile can be affected, but your data is in safe place and you don't care!

The problem happens once your system is rooted, in which case all hopes are lost, so backing up your external location from time to time manually is needed.

IT is more of a problem for a large organization to be hit with ransomware than one individual. Now Linux users are being targeted also
IMO, organizations need to hire better administrators and professionals, just like with everything else there are successful organizations and those which don't succeed.

Successful organizations succeed because of skilled people working there.
