Virus Scan, Windows Security and Windows Update are all not working

    Hi.
So about a month ago, I noticed that the Windows Defender icon has disappeared from my system tray, but I didn't care back then. Just now though, I have noticed that when running a virus scan, it just gets stuck at 0 (it used to be so fast):
Virus Scan, Windows Security and Windows Update are all not working-scan.png
The Windows Security page is just blank:
Virus Scan, Windows Security and Windows Update are all not working-secu.png
And even checking for Windows Updates doesn't work. It spends too much time just "Checking for updates...", then results with this error:
Virus Scan, Windows Security and Windows Update are all not working-updates.png

I'm running Windows 10 Pro, Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.572).

Now, I worry that this might be some sort of virus malware. I'm kinda hesitant to just install some anti-virus / anti-malware though because a lot of them these days just seems to be bloatware. I'm hoping that this is just a bug or something that can easily be fixed.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Begin by runnning sfc/scannow (cmd prompt) and the Windows Troubleshooter (Update/Security page)

Is your system receiving other updates ? Consider updating to latest build 19041.610.

I suggest that you scan with another antimalware utility to help distinguish between the symptoms being the result of a technical fault & a malware attack.

If you do have malware then use that other utility to get rid of it. And you need to assume that everything you have done on the computer since "about a month ago" is compromised - passwords & logins, personal files, …

    Best of luck,

Hi! I ran sfc /scannow and rebooted afterwards, the issues still persists. The Windows Troubleshooter page only shows this.

No, it's not receiving updates. The error above comes up everytime I try to do Windows Update as well.

Hi! I used Malwarebytes and it detected 35 items. Attached here is the Malwarebytes scan results. I quarantined all items and then rebooted. The issues still persist though. I ran another scan and this time, nothing more was detected.

    Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
    • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot
    • Click on Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter

    Download Windows updates manually.

    • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
    • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
    • Select the correct version and click Download
    • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

    Clean Install Windows 10

Good advice above by Freebooter. If issue persists, consider a clean install of Win10 providing you have your documents backed up or a Reset if not.

I suggest that you check all your external drives with Malwarebytes as well, update your backups then clean install.

And don't forget that everything you have done on the computer since "about a month ago" is compromised - passwords & logins, personal files, …

UPDATE!!! The issues are now finally fixed! Here's what I did:

Downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool
    Selected Upgrade Windows 10
Chose to keep all my apps and data

After the upgrade, everything's fixed now! And I didn't lose any data at all, even the settings.

Thanks everyone for helping me fix these issues!
