Initialisation of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) failed

When I booted the laptop yesterday I was no longer able to login using my windows pin. I had to login using the password, can't get the pin to work again. In event viewer under windows logs>system have continuously:

event ID 27 'The initialisation of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) failed. The TPM may be in failure mode. To allow diagnostics, contact the TPM manufacturer with the attached information'

I can easily log on to windows still just using the password and not the pin. Hasn't yet affected any other function of the laptop.

Its an older Lenovo ideapad700, Intel Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU@ 2.gGHZ, 16g ram, SSD hard disk

    Windows version 1909(OS Build 18363.1016)

All windows updates are up to date, I do have the option to download and install win 10 vesion 2004, not sure if that would help?

Not sure if this is a real problem, or I could just ignore it?
    Thanks in advance

Hi, here's some information on TPM:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...hip-of-the-tpm

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology is designed to provide hardware-based, security-related functions. A TPM chip is a secure crypto-processor that is designed to carry out cryptographic operations. The chip includes multiple physical security mechanisms to make it tamper resistant, and malicious software is unable to tamper with the security functions of the TPM.

Thanks, the solution in some of those threads may be a bit advanced for me though, although I can usually do solutions :)

Incidentally, in device manager>security devices>trusted platform module 2.0 - this device is working properly

There's a section about clearing the TPM here, which makes reference to the PIN, which seems to relate to your experience.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/win...hip-of-the-tpm

There are references to issues with TPM with a 2004 update I think, but you're using 1909.

    This is a practical guide:

When I was having trouble using a pin to login to my laptop I had to clear a setting in the Bios. The pin only worked when I first started the laptop. If the laptop was in sleep mode I had to use my password.

    Edit: Login from sleep problem.

I'm not finding any specific issues on Win 10 1909, but ironically, there are a couple of known TPM issues on 2004.

If you do upgrade to 2004, I would suggest installing the currently available Cumulative Update Preview KB457144.

From the list of fixes there are 2 TPM related issues addressed:

    1) Addresses an issue that causes communication with the TPM to time out and fail.

    2) Addresses an issue that prevents hash signing from working correctly when using the Microsoft Platform Crypto Provider for Trusted Platform Modules (TPM). This issue might also affect networking software, such as virtual private network (VPN) applications.

    Resources:

    KB4571744 release notes:

You can download the preview release here:

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=kb4571744

EDIT: If you prefer, you can also download that preview cumulative update by going into the updates section of settings and choosing the option called "View optional updates".
