    Disabling Avira

I installed Avira as a second line of defense to be called on when required. However, it is producing pop-ups, so must be currently 'active'. Autoruns shows many entries, all ticked and I am denied access to untick them. Without uninstalling it, how can I disable it till I need it ? x32W10ProV2004

I don't use Avira, but in every AV I've ever used, disabling it is done from within the program itself.

Only Windows Defender requires an advanced Computer Science degree and registry edits, and batch files, etc, to disable.
Normal AV programs just let you do it, in the program.

Side note: You really don't need a 2nd AV installed on your Windows 10 machine. Windows Defender AV and Firewall is pretty good. If you ever feel like a 2nd opinion, you can use ESET's free online scanner.

Malwarebytes is another popular "2nd opinion".

Do not use standard avira installert/downloader, it often adds some bloatware.

    You have two options:

    To use avira free
    - use avira offline installer from filehorse to install it
    - install bgpkiller
    - create a rule at firewall to block avira systray program
...these actions should block almost all popups

    To get rid of avira
    - uninstall all components in control panel (not in settings)
    - run avira registry cleaner
...these actions should completely remove avira

Muchomurka - your Windows Defender suggestion sounded promising to me. I found three AVIRA entries listed in Inbound Rules in Advanced Security, whose ENABLED status I could change to DISABLED. I can but hope that that does the job.

Incidentally it has alerted me to the possibility of disabling the numerous other entries that are irrelevant to me, but presumably consuming resources.

    preventing Avira pop-ups

The successful technique seems to have been deleting Avira entries in Autoruns Scheduled Tasks.

Months later : I have found Avira services that can not be stopped from running by normal methods - Access is denied.
I am reluctant to start Avira to see if there are disabling settings - a concept I find highly unlikely. So my new question is : Is there a way of FORCING some services to stop running ?
