Acronis True Image or Windows Security

I have found that if Acronis True Image is turned on, Windows anti-virus is turned off in my Win 10 system. I also have Malware Bytes installed. Which is the better combination: Acronis or Windows with Malware?

Which version of Acronis True Image do you have installed?

I have the 2020 version installed, and i am quite sure that installing ATI2020 did not turn off my Windows antivirus.
I do know that ATI2020 has some security features built in, called "Active protection". It's some sort of defense against ransomware and cryptomining. This feature is turned on by default. I can imagine that these security features could interfere with antivirus/internet security software. I have not experienced any interference. I have all features turned on and it has been on from the beginning and there has never been any interference with either Windows antivirus, or my current AV (Kaspersky Internet Security).

The Acronis Active Protection can be disabled (see here), but i am not sure that it is wise to do so.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, i would allways keep antivirus/firewall on at all times.

True Image 2021. This might be something with the Win 10 2004 update. Appears that only one anti-virus -- either Windows or Acronis -- can run at one time.

OK, it seems that ATI2021has integrated Antivirus and Antimalware Protection.
I didn't know that. I don't have any idea if it's any good or how it compares to Windows Antivirus.

    Sorry.

Not something I'd bet the security of my system on.

Whilst Acronis say they had www.AVTest.org test their software they gloss over the fact that system loading was apparently not assessed [AVTest refer to this Performance].
Acronis True Image 2021: Results of the AV-TEST Private Windows Test
The omission of system loading [Performance] results seems, to me, to be unjustifiable & therefore suspicious.

AVTest have not yet added Acronis to their published assessment tables. I could not find any mention of Acronis on their website.

Given the poor software engineering demonstrated by Acronis in their backup products there is no way I would trust any anti virus product they produce!

    Hi there
IMO two remarks -- One I think a lot will agree with and the other one some won't.

Ist I'd dump any version of Acronis in favour of Macrium - either the free one - good for basic image and cloning) or the professional one which gives more features if you need them. Many users on the Forums like Macrium.

2nd - and this is where disagreements can occur - but IMO on HOME only (not Work, Office networks, commercial / e-commerce websites and cloud servers) there's absolutely NO NEED WHATSOEVER in adding any 3rd party AV program - including Malwarebytes these days --Windows defender with its real time protection is definitely robust enough these days on the latest versions of W10.

A lot of those A/V programs supplied by 3rd party vendors were designed for problems in C20 not C21 where "scams" are the name of the game rather than "straight bog standard hacking etc".

I often raise the question here "What does any 3rd party A/V program throw up (excluding false positives which are a nuisance in themselves to verify whether malignant or benign) throw up that WD misses.

Of course if you want to add these wretched programs for peace of mind then that's fine - but really don't kid yourself that they are making your computer any safer than WD would.

Reminder - these remarks are for purely Home computers as I previously mentioned.

Just of interest to those diehards still advocating use of extra A/V products -- current versions of WD and real time protection are based on the security in Ms's very successful AZURE cloud server -- the security in that is regarded as one of the best in the industry --I think it also complies with US Military and FBI security protocols too.

    Cheers

I've heard bad things about Acronis too. As a long time Acronis user since 2009 I have found all those rumors to be false. I found it to be an extremely reliable disaster recovery/hard drive upgrade utility. I have backed up AND restored all my Windows XP, 7 and 10 computers (a backup isn't a backup until you've actually restored from it) with Acronis rescue media. I have tested others too (Macrium, Paragon, R-Drive, Aomei) and they all successfully backed up and restored Windows 10 using their rescue media. This basically means it doesn't matter which you use as long as imaging your drive is something you do regularly.

That said I'm not pleased about all the unnecessary bloat Acronis is adding to it's product such as Anti-virus especially since Windows 10 has one built-in. I'd rather use a dedicated AV product than a utility that tries to be a swiss army knife. This is the reason I don't have Acronis installed on any of my systems and instead rely on their bootable rescue media for backup and restore. To me Acronis will always be a drive imaging tool and nothing more.
