Giving AVAST Free [20.6] a second chance

    Hello.

I have installed AVAST using a minimal custom setup and I am quite satisfied with its performance so far.

+ Copying files from/to USB sticks is a lot faster than using WD.
    + Packing/Unpacking is also faster.
+ Steam runs slightly faster too.
    + Game mode.
+ Interface is a lot nicer.
+ Now with Ransomware protection on free version, although I didn't install it.

To add injury to insult on my girlfriend computer there is an annoying PUP detected that won't go away. She is still using WD.

Let's see how it goes. So far so good. So, fingers crossed.

Well. I have removed it again by restoring a Macrium Reflect image from yesterday. Steam closed without warning while playing.

Too bad because AVAST experience is smoother than WD.

I only use avast since the release of windows 10. I will be able to use windows defender but I keep avast for the password manager and their browser avast secure browser. It is true that for about 2 months the anti-ransomware agent has been included in the free version. I play from time to time video games to keep me busy. I installed steam with a game, when I play with steam I will say what is happening in this thread. For now I have never had any problems when I play.

Maybe check out the free version of 360TotalSecurity?

The only thing I don't like is ads in the free version.

So block internet access to "promoutil.exe" with a firewall or some other method. I use this:

    Code:
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\PromoUtil.exe" /v Debugger /t REG_SZ /d "%windir%\System32\taskkill.exe" /f

You can try Bitdefender Free. It's very fast with a simple, uncluttered GUI.

All other free AVs have given me issues here and there.

I like Windows Defender but after the NetworkInspection bug Bitdefender Free v. 1.0.17.192 is running problem-free here. It is nothing like when I tried it 1+ yrs ago and it had a couple of real issues.

I am staying with WD for now, even if it's not the fastest of the batch.

I would avoid AVG/Avast. They have underhanded practices.

I had already unchecked the options for sending data to third parties before the scandal. I hope they weren't sending data wrongly with the unchecked options and if so I hope it's over.
