CenturyLink Security by McAfee - Norton is gone!!

    CenturyLink Security by McAfee - Norton is gone!!


    For years, my ISP (CenturyLink) has used Norton as their antivirus provider. Just the other day when I went to go pay my bill online, I received an alert saying that Norton would no longer be supported and provided by CenturyLink. The message said for me to download CenturyLink Security by McAfee. Now, I realize I will be told I shouldn't have downloaded it because a lot of you don't recommend these top PC Security programs but I don't like Microsoft Defender - Windows Defender. It's just not for me. My youngest sister calls these optional antivirus programs "Snake Oil", because she doesn't have one on her Windows laptop at work. But everyone is different. I happen to like working with them.

    My question about McAfee is... How will I know where there is an antivirus software update available? When I had Norton, the program was more precise and detailed about the software updates. McAfee just downloads updates, but never asks me to apply a patch like Norton did.

    McAfee is lighter weight than Norton as I am seeing.

    Question: What version of windows does your sisters laptop have?

    I'm with you....I like them and use them. It it works and does the job go with what you like. Back in the day, some 20 years ago, when Norton was Norton and not Symantec....it was robust, light and it did the job better then any other on the market. I had it. When it got bought out.....that's when it got bloated, a resource hog and really slowed down a PC. This is also the time when MS started to play with a AV. Remember One Care and that turned into what we now have with windows 10.

    I say run it for 6 months and then decide whether to keep it or not. I like free.....free is always good.

    It’s Windows 10. The whole business uses Windows 10. It’s an ASUS.

    Ahh...she does realize that she is in fact using an AV.....Defender. It's built in and I know of no way of removing it. Unless you use a 3rd party AV like Norton or McAfee....then windows 10 turn off Defender.

    By default install, McAfee with push updates automatically or your can force them manually.
    Now that is for your existing version.

    You might wish to check to see if a newer product is available - there might be a migration path. Maybe free, maybe paid.

    As for performance, McAfee and Norton tend to be about the same in most instances.
