Edge scans downloads with Windows Defender?

    Hi,

Does Edge (Chromium) use Windows Defender or the registered AV to do the scan on downloads?
I have MalwareBytes Premium. I noticed when downloading a file that it will say it's being scanned. So is it being scanned by Windows Defender or MalwareBytes? MalwareBytes is the registered AV in Windows Security.

    Thanks,

Yes, Microsoft has integrated into their browser products Windows Security for a fairly long period of time now. I can imagine this primarily has something to do with SmartScreen? Although I can imagine it's not limited to deeper scanning and features built into Windows Security.

You can disable SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge by going to Windows Security > App and browser control > [OFF] SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge. Also you can disable SmartScreen for everything else by doing the same thing. The option for this is at the top.

I've heard sometimes theres issues when file scanning especially large files. This will also no doubt conflict with any other security software you have installed which also does the same thing. Now you've got two programs running a scan on the same file. Probably not the wisest of ideas.

    Hi supermammalego,

Thanks for the reply. I know about smartscreen.

My question is what is Edge using to scan the files: MalwareBytes Premium (which is registered in the Windows Security Center) or Windows Defender.

Again thanks for the reply, be safe in these troubled times.

Cryptic invisible reply. I like! I actually went to the effort of working out the deciphering process of your message. It was only highlighting the text but I feel like a code breaker.

    Alas, I shall continue.
Like stated SmartScreen is a feature of Windows Defender and so Windows Defender will be doing the scanning. SmartScreen is like the name suggests is just a theoretical screen that comes into action upon certain triggers. In this case the triggers for SmartScreen for Edge will be mainly downloaded files. When you download something SmartScreen for Edge will spring into action which will call Windows Defender to do the work of scanning. Any necessary action thereafter will be taken by Windows Security depending on the result of the scan.
