Start Edge, click the three dots in the upper right corner, then look in the "Open Microsoft Edge with" box and see if "Previous pages" is selected. If so, change it to something else.

Hi Ben. Ive already checked that and "Open Microsoft Edge with" box is set to Start Page. That doesn't seem to make any difference if you forcibly close Edge down with Task Manager. The next time you open Edge it opens with the previously opened Tab which will probably include the tab and also the Fake Virus Alert popup

Hi, if you want we can take a closer look at your computer. If you want to download FRST run it and bring the reports here. Maybe I can help you.

    Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Thanks for the offer but Im going to see what happens if and when I eventually do get one of those Fake popups. I'll see how the ALT + F4 combination works. Also Ive seen that you can right click on other open Tabs at the very top of the Edge screen and I see there are two other options- Close other Tabs and Close Tabs to the right. The main thing is that you aren't supposed to click on any of the boxes in the Fake Popup window when it appears as doing so can activate malware but you still have to completely close its window down somehow. Im wondering if any of those options might do exactly the same thing as closing down the Edge process using Task Manager achieves

Check that the tab it starts with is unpinned. When that site opens click the lock icon in address bar and block notifications. Just some suggestions.

why raise the problem in the forum if you already have the solution. You pose a problem but do not accept solutions because I repeat you already have the solution so why did you create this topic? In short, a nonsense, I do not comment further on this issue.

The tab should have an X on it, it is this you need to use to close the window. If you’re unsure then that’s fine.
I would also try clearing the cache & cookies.
Sorry mate. Ive just been rereading all the posts in this thread and Ive just realised that I must have misread your advice last week. You were suggesting closing from Tab at the top of the Edge browser screen and not the close box on the Fake Virus Alert window..sorry for my confusion! Also Ive now seen that you can right click on any of the other open Tabs at the very top of the Edge screen and I see there are two other options- Close other Tabs and Close Tabs to the right. Im wondering if your suggestion of closing the Fake Virus Alert from its Tab by clicking on its X or any of these options might do exactly the same thing as closing down the Edge process using Task Manager achieves.

The method I've always used is to position the cursor over the "x" that is used to close the tab, press the "Esc" key with my other hand to close the popup, then quickly close the tab before the page can reload. You may have to do it several times to get the timing right.

Just to add to this thread, AdBlocker Ultimate plugin works well with the new Edge, can be found on MS store and seems (at least on my machine) to have eliminated all of these pop ups, without needing to change any Edge settings.
Not sure if it will help you but it does the job for me.

No ad blocking discussions. This site depends on ads to pay for the costs of running and maintaining it.
