I didn't have recovery media, but now that I have my system back, I created it. I used my backup/restore application to restore my entire drive. Without a restore or boot media, I had no way to access troubleshooting options.
I still want to enable BitLocker, but I'm seriously concerned about a repeat of this experience, and I have no idea how to figure out what the problem was or how to avoid a repeat.
I've no idea as to why your PC acted the way it did, but as posted I did the same procedure and had no issue.
