    Windows Security Virus Scan

This issue just started the last couple days. The actions needed notification advises that the virus protection is turned off and should be restarted. I go into Windows Security and press the restart but after doing whatever for a couple minutes, it states there was an error and can't restart. Reboot my computer and the virus protection is on, but a short time later shuts off again. Win 10 Pro Version 1909 18363.778

Semi-random thought- could that be related to this update..
    KB4549951 CU Win 10 v1903 build 18362.778 and v1909 build 18363.778
as one user reports a different issues with respect to Defender after installing it?

You can verify that by uninstalling the update.

Will uninstall that update and see what happens

I don't have an uninstall option for Microsoft updates. There is an uninstall option for Office and other updates, but the uninstall option disappears as soon as I scroll to the Microsoft updates.

Please confirm you don't have a list like this:
    Windows Security Virus Scan-1.png

e.g. from here (or via the control panel):
    Windows Security Virus Scan-2.png

If not, suggests deeper problems. To which uninstall option are you referring? (A picture is worth...)

    So did this one

My windows defender has started having errors that stop working, stops and cannot be restarted, unless you start it from services.msc....

...I think that i have located the source of the error and it consists of the antivirus stopping when it tries to scan any file whose name is like this: filename..ext
Problem scanning certain files with windows defender

Seems to be a bug in the current definitions, my tests show that Defender works fine with an older definition (1.313.1528.0) and crashes when updated to the current Security Intelligence update 1.313.1666.0 - but only when it scans a file with a 'double-dot' before the extension such as Filename..exe

@dalchina, see if you can recreate this crash in Defender. Copy any .exe file and rename the copy to have two dots before the exe extension. Then right-click on it and scan with Defender. If it scans successfully, then check for updates and get the latest definitions. Try scanning the file again. For me with 18363.778 the only way to restart the Defender service after it has crashed is by starting it in Services.

Yes that's exactly what I have. If you notice there is an uninstall option next to organize if you scroll to other updates ie. office, but it will disappear once you scroll to the latest updates.

@Bree - yes, that's the thread I had in mind.

Unfortunately I have Avast installed.. and as that WU breaks Aeroglass (confirmed by other users of Aeroglass) I have uninstalled the W update. (First ever CU to do that).

Guess I will wait until another update comes out to see what happens.
