Restore Windows 10 Home to factory settings - can't disable Bitlocker

    Hi

I have Windows 10 Home version and really would like to restore the PC to factory settings. The problem is that when I try to reset the PC it gives me the following message: “Bitlocker must be disabled to proceed. You can enable Bitlocker after this process is complete. Do you wish to continue?”. This is the first time I have come across Bitlocker and I understand that Windows 10 Home does not have Bitlocker. This has meant that I haven't been successful in trying to locate where the bitlocker function is. So if I type into the search bar near the start key 'bitlocker' or 'manage bitlocker' , nothing appears for me to try to disable. Similarly if I right click on the drive (I only have 'c' drive) there is no bitlocker option.
I thought I had success when I went to control panel – administrative tools – services, because I was surprised to see a file called BitLocker Drive Encryption which I changed from manual to disable.

There seems to be something somewhere on the PC to do with the bitlocker that is stopping me at the last hurdle from resetting the PC. Could you tell me where I am going wrong please? Your help would be really appreciated.

    Thank you

You say restore to factory settings how are you going to do that? If you restore to a factor it may be years out of date and a seçurity risk best bet is to get latest version from media creation tool and put on the most up-to-date system

Thanks Caledon Ken and Samuria Guru

Samuria Guru - You raise a good point and perhaps I should be thinking about getting the latest version and I'd like that to be the next step although I'd really like to take the pc back to its original settings as a first task (there is a virus on the pc and I'd like to clear it away if I'm able to do that)

Caledon Ken - I looked at the guide which I hadn't seen before and unfortunately although I followed the steps, my PC search results didn't match what was displayed in the guide. So as a first step the guide asked to check the "Device Encryption Support" item (by going to System Information and then selecting System Summary.) In the instruction it says that if it reads "Meets prerequisites", then the computer includes support file encryption. Instead, next to Device Encryption Support it reads "elevation required to view" for me. This meant that I couldn't progress through the other instructions.
For example when I opened Open Settings and clicked on Update & Security and then looked for "Device encryption" it wasn't there. The steps also say that 'if the "Device encryption" page isn't available, then it's likely that your device doesn't support the encryption feature.' So I'm not quite sure what to do next. Any other ideas you have are greatly welcomed.

    Many thanks

If you get the latest ISO boot from that delete all partitions that will kill any virus and give you a clean up to date system

I agree with Samuria. It is also likely the fastest and gives you the best foundation going forward.

A true clean install with all partitions deleted will wipe any viruses. Of course if you delete all partitions you must have your data backed up off machine.

It is strongly recommended that only your boot drive be connected when installing.

Step 24 in this tutorial shows you how to get local account. It also walks you through the entire process. Brink writes an excellent tutorial and this one has been used a lot.

    Clean Install Windows 10

If you are still having issues deleting partitions we can supply some diskpart commands. The tutorial looks long but the process when broken down is simple.

Create boot media with media creation tool, boot from media, delete partitions, install windows. If you go this route I would suggest you have an alternate means to contact the forum.

Also have your software licenses handy for software you bought and deactivate them before you pull the tigger.

I would be interested in seeing a screenshot of the disk management screen showing all drives, but main interest is how the C:\ drive is being reported.
If you have Windows Home then you are correct, BitLocker is not supplied, however it is possible the virus you claim to have might be pretending to be BitLocker, I am not aware of a virus that does this, although it could be a new variant, why it pretends to be BitLocker is another question.
How do you know you have a virus?
If you right-click your C:\ drive in My Computer does the option to enable/ disable BitLocker show there?
Where is the message telling you to disable BitLocker coming from? Can you provide a screenshot?
Also if you need to run any program with elevation, right-click and choose "run as administrator" if the option is there.

Restore Windows 10 Home to factory settings - can't disable Bitlocker-disc-management.png

Thanks all, I really appreciate your time in helping me solve the problem

Pejole2165 - I've added the screenshot of the disk management screen (well, hopefully it's been saved - I couldn't be sure when I uploaded it. I tried uploading 2 attachments, this and the Bitlocker screenshot but it seems only one has been saved to my reply). I have a virus because I have pop up scam notifications that arrive from the right hand of the screen and are of the size of a credit card. I can click on them to go away but of course they return.
I've right clicked the C:\ drive in My Computer and unfortunately there isn't an option to enable/disable BitLocker.
The message to disable Bitlocker is shown at the point that the PC would wave me through to resetting the PC to factory settings. The message acts as a gatekeeper which I can't get past so it sends me back to undo changes.
Apologies because I took a picture of that screen a couple of days ago which doesn't have great resolution (again hopefully it's saved to this reply).
I tried to right click next to 'Elevation Required to View' which is next to 'Device Encryption Support' (under
System Summary in System Information) but no options appear when I right click

Samuria and Caledon Ken - thanks for your insight and a clean installation would be an answer. To create a USB flash drive to store the Windows 10 update do you know what space requirement I would need on the USB to accommodate the Windows 10 programme download?

    Thanks again

    Hi @GratefulPerson,

What is the exact Model of your DELL PC?

To check whether it meets the prerequisites for Device Encryption, please type System Information in the search field, next to the START button, and click on Run as Administrator as shown in the screenshot below.

If your system meets the prerequisites, I would also advise you to turn on the Bitlocker Service (which you turned off) to Manual and make it running. Restore it to the right condition before following any advice given here by the experts.

I would also like to state if your system meets the prerequsites for Device Encryption, unless you log in with your Microsoft Account, Device Encryption is not activated. Means if you use a local account your system will not get automatically encrypted.
(My DELL system is Device Encryption enabled. During the initial setup I logged in with my Microsoft account and my disk got encrypted automatically. Under this condition, you can see Device Encryption in Settings> Update & Security) where you can turn it off or on and save the Recovery Key/s to a file.)

Agree with Jumanjii, you really need to determine if encryption is enabled on your drive (BitLocker or otherwise) and how to disable it if that is what you want, there are many types of encryption available, Windows BitLocker, VeraCrypt, some varients of malware and even built in disk encryption to name a few.
Then there is the issue of the virus you claim to have, you say it gives you pop up scam messages at the right hand side of screen that you can dismiss, well that is where Windows notifications appear by default, so is it possible this is what you are seeing? Again a screenshot of one of these messages would really help.
Anyway if you do decide to do a clean install via Microsoft's media creation tool you will need an 8Gb flash drive (according to the tool) or a DVD writer with dual layer capability if you use the ISO.
To add to the information from Jumanjii there is this guide to device encryption and how to turn it on/ off.
