New Defender Platform 4.18.2003.4-0 - Items skipped during scan Alert

    ----- Update March 25, 2020 ------

Now Fixed by Microsoft's latest platform: 4.18.2003.8-0

Update KB4052623: Microsoft fixes Defender Scan Skip Bug

Just received the latest Defender Platform 4.18.2003.4-0 on both machines in the early AM of Tuesday the 10th, 8 hours before .719 was released but right after this Defender 4.18.2003.4-0 Platform update.

Both received this new alert message about skipping an item during a Quick Scan - 'scan skipped an item due to exclusion or network scanning settings'.

    I have no exclusions!

And, I have never made any changes to my network scanning settings that I know of. Everything under WD's 'Firewall and network protection' is default 'ON'

    Anyone else seeing this?

After further tests by re-imaging my machine back to before this platform update, and then running a scan and NOT seeing this '...scan skipped an item' message, and then updating just the platform, and AGAIN immediately seeing it reappear, I'm certain this is tied to this latest 4.18.2003.4-0 platform update, and in any subsequently released platforms, 4.18.2003.5-0 and 4.18.2003.6-0 now seen 2 weeks later by others, and regardless of the monthly CU's

This issue is triggered for some by any of the Window's Defender Platform updates after and including, 4.18.2003.4-0, and is not due to a virus or a CU, but a change by Microsoft's in the default network scan setting in newer Defender platform engines.

It seems that in the older Windows Defender engines, network scanning was enabled by default, which apparently for some reason Microsoft's documentation does NOT recommend:

    " -DisableScanningNetworkFiles

Indicates whether to scan for network files. If you specify a value of $False or do not specify a value, Windows Defender scans network files. If you specify a value of $True, Windows Defender does not scan network files. We do not recommend that you scan network files."

I had that notification until I removed my 2 exceptions to test and now, no notification. I guess, go back thru all the settings and see what you can find. You have a platform update that I don't and cannot find a way to update to it. My version is 4.18.2001.10

Normally you'll get the latest WD Platform when you go to either Settings > Windows Update > press 'Check for updates'
    or
Settings > Virus & threat protection > under 'Virus &threat protection updates' click 'Check for updates'.

I'd already looked at all my settings and my registry under:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Exclusions

    and it shows nothing.

After further tests by re-imaging my machine back to before this platform update, and then running a scan and NOT seeing the message '...scan skipped an item due to exclusion or network scanning settings' and then updating and seeing it again, I'm almost certain this is tied to this latest 4.18.2003.4-0 platform update.

I think you're right. I still can't get that update and no one else is commenting either. So, I think they've pulled the update. I got some screwy results when googling it as well. Wait and see for me.

I agree. I'm not getting the new update either and right now it's not on the Update Catalog. If memory serves correctly, MS has had "issues" with previous platform updates. Joining the wait-and-see crowd.

I just got pushed a new Defender Platform update:

    Had been

    4.18.2003.4-0

    Now:

    4.18.2003.5-0

Disappointed however to find this 'exclusion item' issue still persists ;o(

No new update yet for me. Still on 4.18.2001.10 and that is still showing in the MS Update Catalog (at least right now).

I'm on 4.18.2003.5, which I got yesterday via WU. I'm not seeing this message.

Thanks for this data point. While it's one of those issues who's misery prefers company, it's all about finding the root cause and any intelligence report is helpful.

At this point I'm not sure why my two systems that don't share files would immediately, after recieveing the 4.18.2003.4 and now 4.18.2003.5 platform updates, both spit out this '... scan item skipped' message.

Having no evidence of any 'Exclusions' appear in my Window Security settings UI or buried in the registry, I'm left thinking it's something new for my situation under this other category - 'or network scanning settings', which to me is somewhat ambiguous where they might all be set? I assumed it was referring to 'Firewall & network protection' settings, all 'Green Checked', or something more obscure, like group policies for network shares which I have none.

I did notice in the release notes for the .619 update there was this bullet item :

    ● Updates to improve security when using external devices (such as game controllers, printers, and web cameras).

Which leaves me to wonder if there was some changes to the WD platform in anticipation. Perhaps some tie in to the fact I've uninstalled the Xbox apps on both machines.

This false alert appears to be affecting others after Tuesday's updates, a bug Microsoft Support reportedly is said to be working on a fix for
