microsoft security client cannot be found

    Hi folks,

Errors in event viewer today. Multiple error codes (2002, 2003, 3002, etc) that say the Microsoft Security Client cannot be found. Looking back, this started mid January and repeats roughly every two weeks. After they happens there is a .net Runtime error and an application error in wmiprvse.exe.

I use Eset NOD 32 if that matters.

Any insight into these errors and what to do if anything?

    Thanks!

    ~Bob

Sure. These are representative. Every two weeks since mid January. "Feels" like M'soft removed this (it is gone from Program Files) but left a task which I cannot find.

Your specs indicate you are running Win10 and Win7 - same system, dual boot ?

Security Client is part of Win7 Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), ESET may prevent MSE from running on the system.

You may want to google the error codes with "Security Client Cannot Be Found" Lot of info for most error codes.

No, two different machines. This is Win 10 only. I Googled extensively before posting here.

Everything I find for 0x80041001 with Microsoft Security Client is old, 2002, 20013 and applies to Windows 7. Nothing recent for Windows 10.

Did you upgrade this PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10? It almost sounds like left over software that is not complete or missing elements.

You could try a Reset keeping data and if that doesn't help then do a Clean Install. In either case, the first thing you need to do is backup your current install. The best way to do this is to use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image backup to an external hard drive. If you don't have an external hard drive now is a good time to get one as regular backup should be a part of your normal process. You can get a 1TB external hard drive for $60 (less if on sale).

Then try reset or clean install.

Factory loaded Win 10 - not an upgrade. Will never do a clean install. This one took 134 hours. Seriously. With all my apps and tweaks.

I back up with Macrium every night.

So what is calling this to create that error? And recall, started mid January.

    Thanks.

How about trying a Clean Boot then, see if minimizing what runs at boot time makes a difference?

I've checked everything in MSConfig and the run keys. Cannot find it. And as you found, nothing on it in Win 10. Which is why I posted here :) Can't recall what happened mid January, but likely that caused this.

What about trying a Clean Boot as I mentioned.

Look at Update History, see if an update was installed then? If it was you could uninstall it and see what that does for you.

Glad to hear you backup regularly.
