ESET free online scanner problems ?

Hello,

I have ESET online scanner installed and run it once a week or so as a second line of defence. I also have MalwareBytes installed which does automatic updates/scans. Both of these have run perfectly for ages but yesterday ESET started behaving oddly. When I run it the various screens have the usual icons but there’s no writing so I can only run it because I remember where to click! I’ve uninstalled it and re-installed and it’s the same.

Now I also notice that when I close a file in MS Word the hourglass icon appears and stays on screen. However if I move it to the edge of the screen it changes to the usual arrowhead pointer. This never used to happen. Are these two issues connected in any way?

I don’t ‘think’ there are any other problems – the PC appears to run normally. I did run sfc /scannow and it reported that it had found some issues which it had resolved, I ran it a couple of times again and all was well.

Not a major problem but I’d like to know what’s happening and what if anything I can do to resolve it…

I don't 'think' this refers to the free on-line scanner though...

Did you download a fresh copy of the executable from eset? I usually include this small one in my winpe - runs fine in windows as well

I've installed that on my PC and it runs ok. It's GUI appears totally different to the ESET online scanner I've been using so I'm intrigued why there should be two different ones - I presume yours is an older version as the one I was having problems with was downloaded from ESET's own site only recently. In any event yours works so I'm grateful. I'll try and download the newer(?) version again sometime and see what happens. The problem was that the various screens showed only icons and no writing so it was difficult to know what you were selecting! It suddenly started behaving like that for no apparent reason. I was going to post on the ESET forum but I was unable to register...

I ran the ESET on-line scanner for a week then downloaded the NOD32 version. I was not particularly impressed and decided to uninstall both. I had problems uninstalling this software - a well documented problem apparently... After uninstalling via the MS apps screen and everything appearing to go well I realised the ESET icon was still on my desktop and when clicked would still run..

I downloaded some software directly form the ESET site purposely written to remove ESET products and indeed ANY A/V programmes apparently. Now I had two ESET programmes installed, F-Secure which I was going to use to replace ESET and Malwarebytes. The ESET software did not detect ANY of them.

I've looked everywhere (excluding the Registry) and deleted every reference to ESET I can find but when I use the search box to look for ESET it comes up with ESET OnLine Scanner, clicking on it does nothing so there are still remnants of their software on my computer.

In my limited experience this software is poor, they should really endeavour to make it more reliable before releasing to the general public.

Yes, the small eset is an older version. I just ran it and it now doesn't want to download the definitions. Is the small one downloading the definitions for you?

Yes I had the same problem. I became a bit dejected when that happened as it was the second version of ESET's on-line scanner I'd used which gave problems. Then when NOD gave trouble as well I washed my hands of them! Incidentally I had similar problems with ESET on my daughter's laptop.

I'm using the F-Secure on-line scanner at the moment and it appears to work well. Nice clean interface and scans very fast. I also use Malwarebytes with an on-line scan every few days.

That is a pain.


The small Eset was the best for running in pe media. Might have to look for something else that is small and portable.

Where have you been for the last few years

What does ANY of this stuff offer to HOME users that 1) Brain (anti-scamming protection) and 2) Windows Defender doesn't.

C'mon Guys

send Malwarebytes, ESET, Norton, Kaspersky etc etc back to the Dinosaur age where they belong -- NO NEED WHATSOEVER on HOME COMPUTERS for this stuff -- the Security computer industry is still full of overpaid "experts" (at least those advising on security for HOME COMPUTERS) who are still living on past glories and reputations of a long gone bygone era.

Note --none of this applies to Enterprise / Workplace etc systems --these remarks are purely directed at those people still "conning" the domestic HOME computer market into buying totally unnecessary security products,

Ms security for Windows for HOME users (based on the almost top rated stuff on its AZURE Cloud servers --probably soon to get US Military recognition) can almost match robust Linux servers for the job.

And I'm a Linux fanboy too -- most of my machines run Linux butI have NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER (Caps intended) on using WD on Windows 10 with its antimalware and realtime detection stuff. -- Those old 3rd party systems were fine back in W7/W8 days when Windows security was a total joke.
