The only way I found was to remove it before install with some third party hack-n-slash type programs and it did not work out well. I don't remember the details, but basically caused event viewer to puke out a LOT of errors and probably broke some other things as well...it's been a while so my memory is foggy about it.

But I would LOVE to learn a way to to gut Defender and System Restore completely, not just disable them after the fact. System Restore, for example, even when disabled every which way possible in System Properties dialog, and GPEDIT, and registry tweaks...STILL turns itself back on whenever it wants to. ARGH!

You could use an option in the tutorial below to turn off Windows Defender Antivirus.

You may also use this tiny app to disable Windows Defender:

IMO, just disable what you can with known native Windows methods, and don't try to surgically excise it. It's woven deep into the general security of Windows. You don't want to cripple yourself.

f14tomcat is very correct! I learned the hard way not to mess with anything that is within Windows Prime. It took a long while to get Windows Defenders back, and later, to get Windows Media Player (and Center) back; I think Windows 7 Repair Install was called for twice.
