What kind of VIRUS is this?

I was on this forum and all of a sudden my complete screen turned a bright red covered part way with another red screen. I'm on Win10 version 1909.
    What I could read on the big screen said; Stop Code: Microsoft Edge Detect Malware Error Report. In the smaller window it said;

    Windows Security
    Microsoft Edge

    OK Cancel

The only way to remove this was to shutdown the computer.
Is this some kind of suck job or what.

I would appreciate an answer if there is one.

    Thank you,
    Fred

Scammer.info - Scambaiters forum, share numbers & more!

For future reference, you don't need to power down the PC. Go to task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and end the Web browser task.

I'm not a coder, but I'm surprised that it's still possible for a Web site to prevent closing a browser window. There may be a legitimate purpose for that, but I have only seen it used by scammers.

If this forum is the ONLY site open. @Brink needs to look at his AD provider. Malvertizments are not good.

FYI, on occasion I've run into these screens when researching various issues and going to unfamiliar web sites. However, I've noticed that with the new Chromium Edge I am able to simply close those tabs. In the past I always had to use task manager to close the offending tab.

Maybe I just got lucky, but that sure seems different than past occurrences for me.

Our only ads come via google and they have many layers of protection so that sort of ad does not get served, I would suggest the OP does a scan with Malwarebytes and a good antivirus as this will be from something he is already infected by.

Thanks for everyone's input. I owe the Administrator of this site a BIG apology. This wasn't the site I was on, it was Tom's Hardware. I'll head out today and get Malwarebytes Premium.
    Thanks again,

You can just use the free version to scan and remove threats. But the paid one is good and does block a lot of these from happening on websites in the first place with its real time protection.

    Hello @Twilight35

In addition to the full time protections of Malwarebytes for Windows Premium (MB4), please give consideration to the supplemental and free protections of Malwarebytes Browser Guard.

Also, consider running the free standalone utility Malwarebytes AdwCleaner on a weekly basis.
