What kind of VIRUS is this?

I was on this forum and all of a sudden my complete screen turned a bright red covered part way with another red screen. I'm on Win10 version 1909.
What I could read on the big screen said; Stop Code: Microsoft Edge Detect Malware Error Report. In the smaller window it said;

Microsoft Edge

OK Cancel

The only way to remove this was to shutdown the computer.
Is this some kind of suck job or what.

I would appreciate an answer if there is one.

For future reference, you don't need to power down the PC. Go to task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and end the Web browser task.

I'm not a coder, but I'm surprised that it's still possible for a Web site to prevent closing a browser window. There may be a legitimate purpose for that, but I have only seen it used by scammers.

FYI, on occasion I've run into these screens when researching various issues and going to unfamiliar web sites. However, I've noticed that with the new Chromium Edge I am able to simply close those tabs. In the past I always had to use task manager to close the offending tab.

Maybe I just got lucky, but that sure seems different than past occurrences for me.
