I have been using Windows Defender in 10 and in Win7 have been relying on updates and defender as well.
The worst useless garbage I used was Norton!! Viruses often got through and it also would bring my PC down to a crawl!! My Acer Aspire One has it as Acer Bloatware and when it caused the system to crawl like a snail and meanwhile letting viruses through like a sieve I ripped it out by the roots. When I got viruses and pop ups using that garbage I would get a different virus scanner and clean things out.
Kaspersky I found good but is expensive. Otherwise AVG or Avira have worked and if all else fails stay away from shoddy web sites, don't open spam emails and question what your friends send you.
Some of my friends surfing shoddy porn sites usually get viruses and out of the blue I get an email with a hyperlink leading to some BS weight loss site and other garbage!
When I notify them that they have a virus then they look at their puter because some of those viruses root through your contacts and send out garbage under your nose.

I was using Kaspersky for a couple of months, but came back to Webroot, which I started using around 2010-11. Here is my threat report since renewing last summer. I've never been successfully infected, and my computers get the best Bench scores with Webroot over Windows Defender, Norton, and Kaspersky. One of these four threats made it into my computer, but never had enough time to start any trouble. The other three never made it into town, and have never been heard from again.
